Navigating the journey of menopause can be empowering when you discover the best perimenopause supplements to support your body and mind during this significant life stage. By maintaining a healthy balance of vitamins and minerals, women can confidently alleviate perimenopause symptoms to enhance their physical and mental wellbeing. During perimenopause, levels of estrogen, the main female sex hormone, fluctuate and eventually start to decline, causing changes to the length of the menstrual cycle, as well as milder versions of the typical symptoms often experienced during menopause.

A wide array of remedies for perimenopause symptoms, including the best menopause supplements that are rich in Vitamin D, Magnesium, B vitamins, iron, and phytoestrogens, have proven to be effective in providing relief during this transitional phase. With the proper mix of these vital nutrients, women can feel more energetic, stable, and in control of their health. To guide you on the path to wellness and understand what supplements you might need, we bring expert advice from Dr Shahzadi Harper, who is also known as The Perimenopause Doctor and is the founder of the Harper Clinic.

"Many women tend to suffer from low Vitamin D levels which causes symptoms such as fatigue, low mood and it can also be a factor in weight gain. So it’s essential that women boost their Vitamin D," Dr Harper tells us.

"Magnesium, often called nature's calmer, can also help to relieve the symptoms of perimenopause and PMS; it can help with anxiety and poor sleep. A Vitamin B-6 supplement taken during and after menopause can help prevent symptoms caused by low serotonin levels."

"Many women also experience heavy periods, so I often recommend an iron supplement, especially if periods are heavy and frequent. Also, if you are vegan/vegetarian, it's important to have the best B12 supplement for energy and mood," she adds.

The heart of the trio - the Perimenopause Complex was tested by Esen Heath, Production Editor for Puzzles at Bauer Media to see how it helps women with the symptoms and it is priced at £28. “After I started taking the supplement, I feel like I have more energy during the day and it has helped to lift my mood as I don't feel as down as I did before,” she said. Regarding the quality of her sleep, she said that she does not wake up in the night as often as she used to and her sleep is a lot deeper than it was before. As she feels less tired and more positive generally, she added that she will keep going with them.

Georgina Finegan, Assistant Editor at Closer also tried the Perimenopause Complex and she said: “For the past year I have been experiencing anxiety first thing in the morning and after taking the supplement for a couple of weeks I noticed that it didn’t feel as severe. The month I tested the supplement I went through a period of change at work, which would’ve ordinarily have caused me to feel stressed, but my general mood remained positive. Best Vitamin D supplement for perimenopause

Yours/Nutri Advanced

Dr Harper emphasized the importance of getting a sufficient amount of Vitamin D during this phase of life, and the Nutri Advanced's Vitamin D3 with K2 Liquid Drops combines essential Vitamin D3, which supports bone health and immune function, with Vitamin K2 for maintaining healthy bones. These orange-flavoured drops can be taken directly or mixed with water.

Nutri Advanced's Vitamin D3 with K2 has been tested and reviewed by Yours and our tester comments: "The most common recommendation I have had from the consultations is that drops are the best way to absorb Vitamin D and that the supplement should contain a D3 K2 combination, which makes this option perfect.”

“I believe it has really increased my energy levels and strengthened my immune system. I just take three drops on the tongue daily and it tastes pleasantly of oranges,” she added. One thing to note is that these D3 drops contain Cholecalciferol which is usually derived from sheep's wool, so it may not be suitable for vegans.

Best supplement for joints, skin and nails

It’s a fact that collagen levels in the body naturally decline as we age. Unfortunately, for women, this only gets worse in midlife. Perimenopause and menopause can have a detrimental impact on collagen levels as a reduction in oestrogen can decrease our natural collagen levels. Not only does this mean our skin will lose elasticity but it’s bad news for our joints too. The good news is that there is something you can do about this.

Taking a collagen supplement is a really easy way to combat this. The award-winning collagen blends from Ancient +Brave are crafted with perimenopausal women in mind. This one is made using grass-fed bovine collagen powder but if you don't eat meat or beef, then they also have a Marine Collagen powder too.

Our Digital Editor Claire Tapley has been taking this supplement for over a year now and can’t rate it highly enough.

“I’m at the early stages of perimenopause and I’ve been so impressed with the difference this supplement has made. Before taking it, I used to wake up most mornings with an aching lower back. After just three weeks of taking this supplement this pain disappeared completely! I recently went on holiday for two weeks and forgot to take this product with me and I noticed the back pain returned. As soon as I got home and started taking my collagen again and the discomfort totally disappeared.

As well as being great for my joints I‘ve also noticed it gives my skin a real, healthy glow. My hair is thicker and falls out less and my skin, which was often quite dry, now appears much softer and plumper.

What I love about this product is how easy it is to incorporate into your diet. It’s completely tasteless so I either pop a spoonful into my coffee in the morning or mix it into my yogurt for breakfast. I’ve actually found that adding this to my breakfast helps me feel fuller for longer too as there is a high level of protein in collagen that will keep you feeling satiated after a meal. I’ve recommended this product to so many of my friends and family and they have all reported similar positive effects.”

Pros

  • Clean ingredients made from grass-fed bovine collagen powder
  • The cows have been raised naturally without hormones, antibiotics, chemicals, or GMOs.
  • Tasteless
  • Keeps you feeling fuller for longer
  • It is a powder supplement, so it is great if you don't like swallowing tablets

Tester holding a bottle of Free Soul Perimenopause supplements Natalie Knowles

The Free Soul Perimenopause supplements are a blend of Vitamin B6, B12, C and D3 which enhances the function of the nervous system, hormonal regulation and psychological function. There are minerals like Magnesium, Iron and Zinc contributing to normal cognitive function and to reduce fatigue.

These supplements were tested and reviewed by Natalie Knowles, age 40, Commercial Content Writer for Yours.co.uk and she said, “I've been looking for natural solutions to combat the painful periods, mood changes and lack of energy that have become much more frequent for me. Even if it makes a five per cent improvement and helps me feel balanced, I was willing to try it. I'm also adamant that it must be natural.”

“So, I was happy to try this Free Soul Peri-menopause supplement. It's a month's supply of tablets with recognisable ingredients. The blend of superfoods, vitamins, and minerals actively fortifies the body. Plus, it contains phytoestrogens to help with menopausal symptoms that come with hormonal changes.”

FAQs

What is the best diet for perimenopause?

Dr Shahzadi Harper tells us that diet plays a key role in managing perimenopause. "Capsules, powders, and tablets are only supplementary to a wholefood balanced diet and should not be used as a replacement," she says.

It is important to ensure your body is still getting all the correct nutrition, and the right supplement can help with this. When it comes to filling the nutrient gaps, Dr Harper tells us that you can also get your daily dose of phytoestrogens in the form of supplements or by eating estrogen-rich foods such as nuts and seeds, oats, coffee, tofu and olive oil.

What vitamins and minerals are essential for women going through perimenopause?

"Vitamin D is one of the most common natural supplements for perimenopause. This vitamin has been proven to combat heart disease, osteoporosis, hypertension, weight gain, diabetes, depression, and some types of cancer," she says.

"During perimenopause, women find their monthly cycles become more frequent or heavier, which can reduce iron levels. This iron deficiency results in levels of ferritin – the protein in blood that stores iron – dropping and a lack of red blood cells being created to carry oxygen around the body. So an iron supplement would help a lot," she adds.

Menopausal women might also suffer from a dry and itchy scalp, as most women experience overall hair thinning rather than noticeable bald spots. Here, a supplement that targets hair and scalp health would be beneficial.

"The thinning can occur on the front, sides or the top of the head. You may find that hair falls out in large clumps in the shower or when brushing your hair as a result of the hormone imbalance. Although this is totally normal and nothing to be embarrassed about, it can be a real confidence knock," she says.

How can supplements help to balance hormone levels during perimenopause?

We asked Dr Harper how supplements actually work to balance hormone levels. She replied explaining that supplements work by putting minerals and vitamins back into your body that you may be lacking – especially during perimenopause and menopause when your hormones are out of balance. Also, as many women are worried about weight gain, they can often be on low-calorie diets and, in doing so, are not getting enough vitamins and supplements through diet alone. Adding a supplement can be essential to ensure all the necessary nutrient gaps are bridged.

What constitutes a high-quality supplement?

"When choosing a supplement, it's essential to opt for a clinically researched supplement, such as the Viviscal Healthy Hair Vitamins which have over 25 years of research behind them," says Dr Harper.

"It’s also important for the supplement to contain certain ingredients, such as Biotin. This is the most common B Vitamin and one of the most primary ingredients found in beauty supplements to support healthy hair, skin & nails," she adds.

Biotin is a protein that strengthens the hair strands meaning hair is less likely to become damaged and break at the ends. Additionally, Biotin improves the infrastructure of Keratin, a protein in our hair that makes up hair, skin, and nails.

Are there any side effects or interactions to be aware of when taking supplements for perimenopause?

People should always ask a healthcare professional before taking any supplements to make sure it is safe to use with other medications. "Not having enough calcium and Vitamin D, or having too much, may cause side effects. For instance, having too little calcium may cause muscle pains, fatigue, mood changes, coarse hair and breakage. Too much calcium on the other hand, can cause vomiting, drowsiness, dehydration and bone and joint pain," she says.
