How we test Easter eggs

Our panel of experts have dutifully tested a wide variety of Easter eggs to select their favourites. Each one was assessed individually and marked out of 10, where we've considered the texture, price, smell and of course - the taste!

The best Easter eggs 2025

Best luxury Easter egg

This is most definitely a grown-up easter egg. This super-thick egg from Hotel Chocolat comes in two split parts, one half is solid caramel-milk chocolate while the other combines puffed rice and cookie pieces in creamy milk chocolate. Not only did we love the mix of textures but both sides of the egg also come stuffed with medley of pralines, caramels and dessert chocolates which were delicious. £30 may seem steep for an egg but this one will certainly last you a good few days and we reckon it's well worth it as a treat.

Score: 9.5/10

Best biscuit Easter egg

While we're not sure this counts as being an egg, we're happy to turn a blind eye as this offering from M&S is seriously tasty. Honouring their popular Extremely Chocolatey Biscuits, the thick chocolate of this 'egg' is generously studded with biscuit pieces. We thoroughly enjoyed dunking shards into a cuppa.

Score: 9.5/10

Best Fairtrade Easter egg

A brand-new release from Tony’s Chocolonely for 2024, as a lover of Tony's chocolate, we were excited to crack this egg open. The packaging is well done (you open from the bottom, not the top FYI) but we were a little disappointed to find you only get five smaller eggs included. That said, the main egg (which is slightly flatter than your average egg) is made from 180g of delicious fairtrade milk chocolate that is studded with caramel pieces and sea salt, a truly gorgeous combination. Also available in milk chocolate.

Score: 8/10

Best stuffed Easter egg

It may not be a whole Easter egg but you certainly don't feel like you're missing out with this creation which is filled with a layer of creamy Bueno-like hazelnut spread and stuffed with tasty chocolate rice crispy crunch. This is then smothered in Belgian chocolate and topped with Bueno®, a Happy Hippo®, Kinder Maxi Pieces®, Belgian white chocolate drops, and gold crunch nuggets. We won't lie, it's not the easiest to eat but the crumbs are 100% worth it.

Score: 8.5/10

Best crunchy Easter egg

Crafted by a fourth-generation chocolatier, this Morrisons Easter egg is sweet and milky. The pretzel and honeycomb pieces and some texture and crunch which elevate the egg into a more luxury status. It is very sweet (yes, even for an Easter egg), so we recommend washing it down with a nice cuppa.

Score: 8/10

Best Easter egg with truffles

We love the look of this egg, the gold dust is a nice touch and being a fan of salted caramel, we were immediately drawn to it! The truffles filled with Baileys are delicious, really creamy on the inside with a kick from the salted caramel - we could have eaten a whole pack of them quite happily! We like that the egg isn't just plain milk chocolate but also has the salted caramel flavour, as often in sets with separate chocolates the egg is plain, so that was a lovely surprise.

Score: 9/10

Best little Easter eggs

If you're looking for a rich egg, we have a treat for you. Bryn The Dragon Easter egg is one mighty beast and feels heavy when you first pick it up. Half the egg is the traditional, slim, milk chocolate shell, the other half is a block of chocolate with a white chocolate dragon shape surprise on the surface. And just when you get comfortable and expect no more surprises, you bite into that half and pleasantly come across a crunchy, sweet caramel centre. We'd love to say we ate it in one go (believe us, we tried to, it tasted so good), but this is definitely an egg to indulge in over a couple of days.

Score: 9.5/10

Best dark chocolate Easter egg

Dark chocolate lovers, this one is for you. This egg comes with dark chocolate truffles which are melt in the mouth and decadent. The egg is think chocolate with pieces of cranberry and almonds throughout which make this egg tasty and add texture. The chocolate has that dark chocolate snap but is velvety too.

Score: 8/10

Best Oat Milk Easter egg

Rich in flavour and colour, the texture of this oat milk egg is crunchy to begin with, and the flavour starts off as chocolatey. It then quickly melts and provides a burst of salted caramel flavour. This is a great option for people who enjoy the richer flavours associated with dark chocolate.

Score: 8/10

Best Easter egg with truffles

This deliciously moreish Easter Egg from Monty Bojangles is ideal for grown up chocolate lovers as the flavours are very rich. The truffles in particular are super creamy in texture and come in three flavours: Choccy Scoffy, Flutter Scotch and Berry Bubbly. Packaged in a strong and sturdy curved-shaped box, things are packaged very securely, making this egg ideal for sending in the post to friends and family far and wide.

This Easter egg lives up to being extra thick, and practically melts in the mouth as it's so creamy. The honeycomb, pretzel and caramel flavours work together so well and give the egg a lovely crunch. We only wish the chocolate had a stronger flavour to match!

Free from dairy, gluten, egg and nuts, this egg comes with a gooey, caramel chocolate bar. We thought the bar was a very good alternative to Cadbury caramel for those that are vegan or have intolerances. The chocolate is quite sweet and tastes slightly nutty with a sea salt undertone to it. Overall, this made our Vegan tester very happy.

Score: 7/10

Best milk chocolate Easter egg

This egg was wrapped in plastic with a red ribbon around the top, showing off all the fun, colourful candy beans. The milk chocolate was smooth and rich without being sickly sweet, and even though most of the candy beans fell off when we cracked it, they made a nice treat to nibble on between bigger chocolate pieces. These eggs were really thick at the bottom, so we were really able to savour the chocolate.

Half an egg!? What daylight robbery is this? we hear you cry. But stay with us because this half-milk chocolate shell holds luxurious caramel ganache filled eggs, digestive crumb, salted caramel sauce and crunchy butterscotch pieces. Oh and it's topped with crispy pearls, fudge pieces and a touch of gold for an elegant finish. It's gorgeous but very sickly but this won't be a problem if you've got a sweet tooth. Our only issue was that there's no tidy way to devour this beast so it doesn't stay looking pretty for long. We recommend a bowl and a sharp knife to cut through the glorious contents.

Score: 8/10

Best salted caramel Easter egg

This smells amazing and is appealing before you've even tasted it. It's one medium size milk chocolate egg that's infused with salted caramel. It's a luxury chocolate and makes for a special little gift. If you're feeling greedy you could consume this in one sitting.

Score: 9/10

One for those who like their white chocolate, this large, creamy white chocolate hollow egg comes with white Maltesers truffles that combine malt and honeycomb. The gold packaging makes the whole thing feel luxe and we loved snaffling the egg, knowing that we had the divine truffles to come.

Score: 7/10

Best smash Easter egg

Set on a thick plaque of milk chocolate that can be personalised (for an extra cost) with a message of your choice, this charming milk chocolate egg with a topping of white chocolate and a matter of Smarties is filled with Chocolate Mini Eggs and mini marshmallows. Smashing the egg to release the goods is a fun experience for adults and children alike and everything tastes scrummy.

Score: 8.5/10

There's no need to choose between creamy milk chocolate or smooth white chocolate with this Easter egg from Thorntons as it comes with plenty of gorgeous chocolates for you to enjoy from their Classic collection. It's smaller than we would have liked for the price, but there's no denying the high-quality chocolate that you get from Thorntons.

Score: 7.5/10

Best unique Easter egg

This has to be one of the most interesting Easter eggs we've ever tried. Rococo's offering on a vegan option offers multiple layers to indulge in. First we have the egg which comes in two halves. One half is a sweet beetroot dark chocolate; very much tastes like dark chocolate, but the sweetness of the beetroot takes, what can be, the harsh dark chocolate edge away. The other half is milc chocolate with tomato flavour. This creamy vegan choccie tastes no different to actual milk chocolate. It's a thick portion, easily shareable between two (perhaps even 3 people) or just to save over a few days. Although you can't taste tomato here, the taste is sweet. Adding to the layers is the filling: corn, spinach and carrot shaped pieces: The corn (made with corn) really tastes like sweet corn with a crumble. It's a delicious, sweet chocolate. The carrot shaped one has a crunchiness to it, however doesn't taste like chocolate. It's the only one that doesn't taste like chocolate out of the lot. The only way to describe the flavour is, it tastes like vegetables, but which type is undistinguishable. It has a veggie, grainy taste and texture to it. The spinach simply tastes like a sweet spinach and an enjoyable little addition.

Score: 7/10

Best popcorn Easter egg

We do love an Easter egg with a difference and this one from Popcorn Shed certainly fits the brief. The Belgian milk chocolate egg shell has caramel popcorn enrobed in the chocolate on the inside and we really enjoyed the combination of textures and flavours. It's decorated really nicely too with a drizzle of white chocolate and multi-coloured beans on the outside.

Score: 8/10

Best Easter egg with alcohol

This creamy liqueur is a great alternative to a chocolate egg. One for the adults in your life (and for you) its smooth, chocolate taste just glides down your tongue, leaving a rich, velvety aftertaste. Although heavily chocolate based, it’s not overpowering, but its price wise is in line with other alcoholic alternatives on the market. It comes in a beautiful box, doesn’t need to be wrapped up and makes for a perfect keepsake. Egg Royale’s attention to detail (with the bunnies on the ribbon) is just delightful.

Score: 8/10

Best Vegan Easter egg

Like its non-vegan alternatives, this Nutmilk egg is nicely presented in an eye-catching case. The thick chocolate shell is made of Nutmilk, Hotel Chocolat's Vegan alternative to milk chocolate, without milk and contains finely milled hazelnuts which gives a subtle praline backnote. Met with the enticing aroma of rich chocolate, the egg consists of two half shells each containing six delicious chocolates, with two of each flavour that are perfect for sharing. The chocolates inside are a lovely choice of decadent fillings, our favourites being the Nutmilk city bunny and the Peanut Butter Jelly Nutmilk. This delicious Vegan Nutmilk Egg and all of the specially selected chocolates inside are in a class of their own and we have no doubt it would be enjoyed by any chocolate lover, Vegan or otherwise.

Score: 9/10

Best chocolate orange-flavoured Easter Egg

Who doesn't enjoy a segment or five of Terry's Chocolate Orange? The milk chocolate egg in this pack is flavoured with real orange oil and comes with an exploding candy ball but we really wished the egg had the exploding candy pieces in the shell too.

Score: 7/10

Best nutty Easter egg

This unique-looking Easter egg comes complete with corners - only fitting since it's made by Toblerone! We inhaled this milk chocolate egg studded with honey and almond nougat and the accompanying mini chocolates in one sitting, but felt it was a little thinner than we would have liked.

Score: 8/10

Best Lindt Easter egg

One of our favourite chocolatiers, Lindt chocolate always goes down a treat and one of their eggs will always be a popular choice. The salted caramel bunny is divine, combining smooth milk chocolate with salted caramel pieces. While the egg was enjoyable, we would have loved it more if the chocolate had been either salted caramel flavoured or featured pieces in like the bunny too. Score: 7/10

Best supermarket vegan Easter egg

This vegan Easter egg, made with a rice-based alternative to milk chocolate, is perfect for vegans and those intolerant to milk. It has satisfyingly crunchy caramel flakes, a lovely moreish orange flavour with smooth, tasty chocolate - you wouldn't even know it was vegan!

Score: 8/10

Recommended

This tasty Milk Chocolate Egg comes with a selection of tempting Lily O'Brien's chocolates such as Hazelnut Torte, Creme Brulee and Raspberry Infusion from their award-winning Desserts Collection. While the egg was enjoyable enough, it was the chocolates that stole the show.

Score: 7.5/10

Best nutty Easter egg

Anyone would be lucky to receive this nut-studded milk chocolate Easter egg, made by independent family business Rumsey's Handmade Chocolates. The egg shell is thick and generous while the chocolate is clearly high quality and deliciously creamy. You'll also get a tray of handmade nutty chocolates. We were really impressed with the overall presentation and this egg would be a great pick to gift to a loved one.

Score: 9/10

Best blonde Easter egg

If you have a sweet tooth then this golden chocolate egg is perfect! If you aren’t familiar with golden chocolate, caramelised sugar and milk are used, giving this chocolate a white chocolate and toffee flavour that is divine. Topped with a white chocolate drizzle and crispy caramel pieces, this egg was definitely an indulgent treat that we got through very quickly. The egg was also gorgeous to look at, so you may want to hide it away or risk eating it early!

Score: 8/10

Best Cadbury's Easter egg

Our only complaint about your average Cadbury Easter egg is that the shell can be a little thin. Enter, the Cadbury Daily Milk Chunky Egg with its extra-thick chocolate shell to chomp into. For any Dairy Milk fan, this one is bound to leave you satisfied.

Score: 7/10

Best Easter egg for gifting

This is a well-presented, thoughtful gift idea for Easter, for anyone in the family. The egg itself is made of milk chocolate, and splits into two halves. The egg has a rich milk chocolate flavour and lives up to its luxury name. Once you crack it open, there's a surprise set of mini eggs in the middle. These have a crispy shell exterior and on the inside is a rich caramel – these little eggs are so luxurious you couldn't consume multiples in one go. This is also not the type of Easter egg you would devour in one sitting and is an ideal egg for sharing.

Score: 9/10

Best blonde chocolate Easter egg

If white chocolate is your thing, you'll adore this Morrisons The Best Belgian White & Blonde egg. It has been marbled with a caramel flavoured chocolate and you'll also get little pieces of crispy butter biscuit with every bite. The texture of these initially caught us off guard as they are more wafery than biscuity, but delicious all the same!

Score: 7/10

Best Easter egg for kids

Thorntons Milk Chocolate Unicorn EggThorntons

If you're looking for Easter eggs for the grandkids, these Thorntons Milk Chocolate Unicorn Egg will go down a treat. The flavours are simple: milk chocolate with a white chocolate unicorn decoration. We would like to see some inclusions, but all-in-all it's a decent egg.

Score: 8/10

Best tea inspired Easter egg

Matcha inspired easter eggBird and blend tea

With pretty spring-coloured packaging, this Easter egg looks lovely. There can be no doubt that it is matcha infused when you open the egg because the chocolate is green. However, don't let that put you off. The chocolate is thick and creamy but doesn't get too sickly because there really is an aftertaste of matcha tea. For some this could be a little bitter, but we thought, with all the sweetness of Easter chocolate, this made a refreshing change and really enjoyed this Easter Egg. If you are a fan of tea, especially green tea or matcha then this egg is for you!

Score: 8/10

Best blonde Easter egg

This egg is definitely one for those with a sweet tooth! The chocolate is caramelised without being bitter, and really smooth. The egg had pieces of freeze-dried raspberry in it, and shortbread balls which add a flavourful crunch. This one came with some blonde chocolate truffles which were incredibly creamy and delicious. It's also such an eye-catchingd egg so definitely worth it if you want a treat!

Score: 9/10

Best raspberry Easter egg

This egg is presented in a high-quality tin where inside you'll find a luxurious-looking pink chocolate egg. The raspberry flavour is sublime and the cocoa nibs and pieces of raspberry compliment the creamy white chocolate base with a nice crunch, each egg comes with a surprise inside. This would make a lovely gift however we found the chocolate a little thin considering that this egg has such a high price point.
