Coronation FAQs

Is there a bank holiday for the Coronation?

To give families and communities nationwide a chance to come together and enjoy the Coronation, Monday 8 May has been proclaimed a Bank Holiday. This means we have a long weekend to join in with the celebrations.

When is King Charles' Coronation?

King Charles' Coronation is officially on Saturday 6 May 2023. However, Charles actually became King as soon as Queen Elizabeth II, his mother, passed away back in September. The new Monarch was formally acknowledged by the Government during the meeting of the Ascension Council at St James Palace the day after the Queen's passing. As you can imagine, it takes a while to organise a big event such as a Coronation, which is why it's taking place in May.
As well as the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, there are many other celebrations and services taking place across the Coronation weekend, including a special Coronation Concert broadcast live at Windsor Castle. People are also invited to share food and fun with their neighbours in The Coronation Big Lunch and take part in The Big Help Out, which encourages people to try volunteering in their local area.

Where will the Coronation happen?

Just like his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles’ Coronation is set to take place in London’s Westminster Abbey. It’s a tradition for Monarchs to be crowned here for over 900 years.
The service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and will begin with the Archbishop confirming Charles’ acceptance of becoming King by reading the Coronation oath.
Charles will then be asked to govern the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth nations with law and justice while maintaining Christianity in the nation.
King Charles III will then sit in the Coronation Chair which is also known as Edward’s Chair. He will then hold the Sovereign’s sceptre and rod and the Sovereign’s orb.
He will then be anointed, blessed and consecrated by the Archbishop, who will then place the crown of St Edward on the King's head.
