Best fans to keep you cool

Best overall

Dyson AM09 Hot + Cool Fan HeaterDyson

This Dyson fan is a big but worthy investment, and as it can be used as a heater as well as a fan, it won't be collecting dust for ten months of the year.

Recognisable for Dyson's trademark low-noise bladeless design, the AM09 promises a smooth and steady flow and oscillates gently to spread its breeze evenly around a room. You can also opt for more direct cooling when you’re really feeling the heat.

There’s no hiding that this is a pricey fan, with customers questioning whether it is worth the money, but we think because of its dual-functionality as a fan and heater, sleek and modern design and safety features, such as the automatic shut-off function if the fan is accidentally tipped over, the price is justifiable.

Pros

  • Dual-purpose as it works as a heater as well as a fan
  • Customers rated it for its sleek design and safety features, like the automatic shut-off function

Cons

  • It is a more premium price point but we think it's worth it
Dimensions:72.5 x 27 x 25cm
  • 10 Speed settings, bladeless design, 45 Degree airflow projector, oscillation, quiet, hot and cold air, aerodynamic diffusers, remote control, 1.8m cord length

Best indoor and outdoor fan

Price: $149.99 (was £199.99)

You may know Shark for its powerful vacuums and quality floor cleaners, but did you know that they've now branched out into the world of fans? It's marketed as a 12-in-1 fan as it can be used both indoors and outdoors, corded or cordless, tabletop or pedestal and so much more. We certainly think this gives the Dyson fans a run for their money!

Wherever or whenever you need cooling power, the Shark FlexBreeze will be available to provide you with instant cooling. It offers five fan speeds so you can control the strength of the breeze, a 180-degree oscillation so it'll cover a lot of space around your room and a 55-degree tilt so you can angle the cooling to just how you like it.

The stand-out feature on the Shark FlexBreeze is the misting attachment so when you're using it outside, you simply attach it to your hosepipe to get a cooling spritz as it passes you. Just like us, customers loved that they could use it as both a cordless and corded model to offer more flexibility while using less electricity. As a fairly new product to the market, it's got so many positive reviews already but from our research, one reviewer felt the remote control could be better but for a lightweight, quiet fan that offers so much versatility and flexibility to how you use it for under £200, you can't really go wrong.

Pros

  • Described as a 12-in-1 fan with multiple ways of using it to offer flexibility and versatility
  • Designed to be used both indoors and outdoors for cooling relief wherever you are

Cons

  • One reviewer thought the remote control could be better
Dimensions:94 x 35 x 35cm
  • 12-in-1 fan, 5 cooling speeds, 180 degree oscillation, 55 degree tilt, 24 hours battery runtime, misting attachment

Best adjustable fan

At 42 inches tall (almost 106.88cm), this LEVOIT Smart Silent Tower Fan is brilliant at cooling down rooms big or small. Our tester liked that it can be controlled in multiple ways: either on the top of the fan, through a remote, through an app or Alexa, which gives you the option of voice control.

There are 4 settings (normal, turbo, auto and sleep) and 12 speeds. We particularly found the Advanced Sleep Mode useful, as you can change the speed and customise the settings to fit around your regular sleeping patterns. Also, it's super quiet, meaning you can sleep soundly or listen to your TV or radio shows without any distractions.

Tried and tested by Yours Commercial Content Writer, Arabella Horspool: "After years of using the same small fan, the LEVOIT Smart Silent Tower Fan is a much-needed upgrade. It makes little to no sound when it's turned on; I am impressed at how easy it is to use, as well as the extensive range of features! There are buttons on top of the device, which you simply swipe your finger - no need to press them, but you also have the remote option (which tucks away in the side of the fan for simple storage). as well as the app and the Alexa voice control settings, which gives plenty of flexibility in how you work the fan."

Pros

  • Quiet but powerful (minimal noise levels are as low as 25dB)
  • Full flexibility in how it's controlled (Alexa - voice control, app, remote control and on the fan itself)

Cons

  • May feel "loose" on the base, but it needs this to help it oscillate
Dimensions:‎16 x 17.1 x 107.6 cm; 4 kg
  • 90° oscillation and 60° up and down, 12 speeds, 4 modes

Most affordable and effective tower fan

Bionaire Oscillating Tower FanCredit: Natalie Corner/Yours.co.uk

At under £40, the Bionaire Oscillating Tower Fan with Remote Control & Timer is an affordable fan that doesn't shy away from adding crucial functions like an auto-off eight-hour timer so you can ensure it switches off by itself while you're sleeping, plus sleep and breeze modes that simulate natural airflow to suit the environment and when you're using it.

Our tester appreciated the size and the quality of this fan. It didn’t take up too much room in their bedroom and they felt like it would last them a long time too. They also appreciated the quiet sleep mode so they could stay cool but not feel disturbed by the noise of it. However, customers on Amazon felt it was noisier than they expected. Customers valued having a remote control so they could adjust the speed from afar and how stylish it looked with its black and silver colourway.

Tried and Tested by Commercial Content Editor Natalie Corner: "After doing some research, I opted for tower fan as a pedestal fan didn't seem like a durable and long-term choice. The Bionaire Tower Fan came up as one with a lot of positive reviews and was affordable, yet is something that would last me a long time. My bedroom is fairly small so it keeps me perfectly cool and during the night, it proved to be essential to sleeping thanks to the quiet sleep mode, plus the ability to switch between the oscillating movement or keep it still and the airflow directed one way."

Pros

  • Affordable but packed with features that you'd expect from a more expensive option making it good value
  • Our tester thought it was a good size for keeping a small bedroom cool

Cons

  • Some reviewers found the fan to be noisy but our tester thought it was quiet thanks to the quiet sleep mode
Dimensions:14 x 14 x 74cm
  • 8-hour timer, oscillating option, three-speed, sleep mode, remote control

Best fan for large spaces

Dyson Cool Tower Fan AM07Credit: Eleanor Weaver/Yours

Another option from Dyson that you may want to consider for your home is the Dyson Cool Tower Fan AM07. It's been engineered for larger spaces so if you're after all-room cooling, this is a great option.

It offers a powerful, amplified airflow that gives an uninterrupted stream of smooth airflow at all times and cools you fast when you need it during heatwaves and warm weather seasons. It also has an impressive 70-degree oscillation that will get your room nice and cool within a matter of minutes.

Our tester couldn't sing the praises of the Dyson Cool Tower Fan enough and it's certainly got a lot of use over the three years that they've had it. As they've mentioned, you will need to make sure you're regularly giving the filters a good dusting as the performance may waver if they're too clogged up. You should also make sure you keep the remote in a safe place as it's vital for controlling the fan, but as it's magnetic, it sticks to the top of the fan, so as long as you remember to put it back every time you've used the remote, you shouldn't have any issues.

Tried and tested by Deputy Product Editor, Eleanor Weaver: "I don't know how I survived summers before my Dyson came into the picture, but it's honestly been a Godsend. As well as looking good, I've found it to be considerably more powerful compared to other fans on the market, and more powerful than the more expensive Dyson Purifier Cool, in my experience. As a hot sleeper, I've used my fan for what feels like almost three years straight, and it's still as effective as the day I bought it, making it fantastic value for money. It comes with a remote which magnetises to the top of the fan (great if you're prone to losing things!) and with that you can control the power settings and set a timer if you so wish. The oscillation, which turns 70-degrees, is great for cooling larger rooms and yet, I've found it to be surprisingly quiet for the amount of airflow it's pushing out.

"The only thing to be wary of is that you need to stay on top of your dusting to make it perform its best - the airflow power will be compromised if you let the airflow filters get clogged. That being said, it is super easy to clean. And, if you do lose the remote, you won't be able to control your Dyson as the fan itself only has an on/off button."

Pros

  • Powerful
  • Better value for money than other Dyson fans
  • Remote magnetizes to the top of the fan

Cons

  • Performance suffers if filters aren't cleaned regularly
Dimensions:100.7 x 23cm
  • Bladeless design, sleep timer, 70 degree smooth oscillation, remote control, quiet

Best fan for sleeping

Honeywell HY254E QuietSet Tower FanHoneywell/Amazon

The best thing about the Honeywell Tower Fan is not the five different levels of control (although that’s a pretty decent feature in itself) but the super-quiet whisper technology that allows you to get an undisturbed night's sleep.

The timer lets you program the fan for one, two, four or eight hours so you can set your fan on for exactly how long you need, and because it also comes with a remote control, you won’t need to get up from where you’re sitting or lying down to change the settings.

Overall, customers have praised the Honeywell Tower Fan for its quiet operation, multiple speed settings so you can control how strong the breeze is and its timer feature. The biggest flaw with this fan is that it doesn’t have an oscillation feature but if you’re just staying in the same place while using it, this won’t be an issue.

Pros

  • Multiple speed settings to control how strong the breeze is
  • Whisper quiet technology so shouldn't disturb your sleep

Cons

  • Doesn’t have an oscillation feature so won't move the breeze around the room
Dimensions:82.6 x 27.4 x 20.6cm
  • Timer, whisper quiet tech, remote control, control panel, oscillation, floor mount

Best fan for adjustable breeze

ANSIO Tower FanANSIO/Amazon

With over 9,000 ratings and an average of 4.6-star rating out of 5, the ANSIO Tower Fan 30-inch is a popular choice with customers on Amazon.

It comes with three-speed settings and, to really up the ante, it comes with three wind settings to customise the breeze to your comfort. There's also a 7.5-hour sleep timer for your overnight convenience.

Although it has many raving reviews, some customers found it had a noisy operation and felt the build quality could be better, but we and many other customers think this fan is a winner for its powerful cooling and around-the-room air circulation, thanks to the oscillation feature.

Pros

  • Three wind settings to alter the breeze to your comfort
  • 7.5-hour sleep timer so the fan will automatically shut off while you're sleeping

Cons

  • Some customers thought it had a noisy operation
Dimensions:24 x 24 x 76.5cm
  • Three-speed setting, wind mode, 7.5 hour timer function, oscillation, integrated carry handle, digital display, remote control, 1.75m power cable

What you need in a fan is silence, and this Dreo option more than hits that requirement. It's a large piece of equipment but well worth it taking up the extra space during any heatwave.

This bladeless fan can be controlled via a remote control, so you can sweat in peace without having to get up and turn up the breeze higher. As it oscillates, the air can be distributed evenly across any room to keep everything nice and cool.

At 42 inches tall, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got plenty of space to put it as some customers have found it to be too big for some of the areas around their home. Some also wished the fan had a timer feature so it could automatically switch off while they were sleeping. Other than that, reviewers loved the bladeless design, especially in homes with children/grandchildren and pets, and how powerful the airflow is.

Pros

  • Bladeless design is a great safety feature for homes with children/grandchildren and pets
  • Controlled via a remote control for more convenience

Cons

  • Quite tall so make sure you've got ample space to put it
Dimensions:32.3 x 32.3 x 106cm
  • Six-speed setting, wind mode, 12 hour timer function, oscillation, digital display, remote control, 1.8m power cable

Best fan for travelling

EasyAcc Handheld Fan Portable USB FanEasyAcc/Amazon

It has a 4.6-star rating on Amazon for a reason - this handheld fan from EasyAcc is just that good. It's battery-operated but it comes with a USB lead so you can recharge it anywhere.

You can hold it close to your face without any worry that you will injure yourself thanks to the protective cover. The three-speed function includes a strong powerful airflow and depending on what speed you use can give you up to eight hours of continuous use.

Our tester loved the convenience of this handheld fan so they could stay cool wherever they were on the go.  A handful of reviewers questioned the durability of the fan, saying it didn’t feel as powerful as when they first got the fan, but these reviews are definitely in the minority as there are 100s of rave reviews on Amazon loving the versatility, performance and battery life of this handheld option.

Tried and Tested by Commercial Content Editor Natalie Corner: "I don't know where I would be without my trusty handheld fan, it's the best money I've ever spent. It's got me through the sweatiest of days in London on the tube where everyone looked at me with jealousy as I blasted my face. It also travelled with me to Bali where it was permanently attached to my hand as I battled the 30-degree sun. The thing I love about it the most is that the handle folds, so you can turn it into a mini desk fan or rest it on the table next to your sun lounger when you're on holiday!"

Pros

  • Portable so you can take it with you for cooling on the go
  • Despite the smaller size, it's very powerful

Cons

  • A handful of reviews questioned the durability of the fan but there are 100s of other reviews that rave about the overall performance and battery life
Dimensions:14 x 11 x 10.01cm
  • Fan can fold up to 180° as a mini handsfree stand, rechargeable battery, USB cable, Fully charged - speed1 can last 8 hours, speed2 can last 5 hours, speed3 can last 3 hours

Our verdict: Which is the best fan to keep cool?

It all comes down to how much money you want to invest in your fan combined with what you need your fan for.

If you're looking for a super quiet fan, cooling and heat technology, capacity to cool a large space, and it not break after a few months then here at Yours we would recommend the best fan to get your hands on is the Dyson AM09 Hot + Cool Fan Heater, the best tower fan investment that means you won't have to think about buying another fan for a fair few years.

We also think the new Shark FlexBreeze gives the Dyson fans a run for their money as it can be configured from a pedestal fan into a tabletop one, can be used both indoors and outdoors, and it can be used cordlessly, as well as corded, for up to 24 hours. This versatility and flexibility gets a huge thumbs up from us.

For a more affordable option, we suggest Bionaire Oscillating Tower Fan, it is not the most powerful but has a sleep mode so that the airflow sounds more natural and quiet while you sleep.

Are Dyson fans worth it?

When it comes to fans and heaters, Dyson always seems to be the brand name on everyone's lips. Investing in a Dyson fan is expensive, yes, but when you think about cost per use or how long it will last over time it could be the answer to your problem of looking for the best fan to keep you cool.

Dyson fans have so many different functions, and with the AM09 you can use that all year round thanks to its dual functionality. That could save you money on heating bills if you only wanted to heat up one room.

What type of fan should you buy?

When it comes to choosing the best fan for your needs, there are a couple of things to consider, like the amount of space you have, how much you want to spend, where your electrical sockets are and if you want a powerful (and usually noisy) fan to really blast you, or something a little quieter so that you barely notice it.

Tower fan - a slim vertical design that will take up the least amount of space in your home. The upright design of the tower fan means that, unlike a conventional round-blade fan, the cool air is not focused on a very specific point, it’s distributed more evenly with an oscillating function.

Stand or Pedestal fan - the most common and affordable type of fan. The stand or pedestal fan is tall with a thin pole an adjustable blade unit attached to the top. A budget option, but bear in mind cheaper styles can be quite flimsy.

Desk fan - know that you need to keep cool while working from home and don't have much space? A desk fan might be a better option and means you can direct the airflow in your personal space. Surprisingly effective, but only short range.

Portable handheld fan - handheld fans can be an absolute saviour when it comes to going out and about in the heat. If you're braving a commute or travelling somewhere you know doesn't have a fan then bagging yourself a rechargeable battery-powered fan is the best thing you can do.

What features should you look out for when buying a fan?

Timer - A crucial feature for those who want to sleep with their fans switched on. A timer function means you can set it for one, two, four, eight or even 12 hours before it shuts off automatically. A timer can also be used if you want to set it when you're out and return with your home refreshingly cool.

Speed settings - If you're happy with one or two-speed settings and are not looking for anything fancy a desk fan or pedestal fan may be the thing for you. But many fans will have more than three speed settings that can provide you with a little more option when it comes to how cold you want to be.

Noise - One of the most important features of a fan that can often be overlooked. The best way to find out if a fan you're looking to purchase is noisy is by reading other customer reviews. They will be honest, but also factor in if you're a light sleeper or if you're happy to sleep with earplugs or headphones.

Size - When you're looking at fan options size is a big factor to consider. How much space do you have, which room will it be in? A tower fan will be a good option for a small space as it will cool the whole area, but a pedestal fan could be all you need if you don't want to spend a lot of money.

Does it purify the air? Some fans also act as air purifiers which can be a real benefit to people who suffer from allergies when the pollen count intensifies. You may also want to consider investing in a humidifier to help.

Dual function - higher priced fans like the extremely popular and expensive Dyson Hot and Cool Fan Heater offer dual functionality. So you're investing in something that will give you the cold air you desire, but also during winter months, it won't be collecting dust as you can use it as a heater.
