As the festive season approaches, many families begin their countdown to Christmas with an Advent calendar and these days there are plenty of dog Advent calendars so that your four-legged friend can join in on the fun!

While traditionally filled with chocolates or tiny toys, pet Advent calendars have been invented to include options for our beloved fur-babies. So, if you're looking to spoil your four-legged friend with treats, toys, or even pampering products during the festive season, a dog advent calendar is a perfect choice.

Lily’s Kitchen Christmas Dog Advent CalendarArabella Horspool/Yours.co.uk

This Lily's Kitchen Dog Advent Calendar features three different treats (Turkey with Cranberry Bites, Chicken and Quinoa Bites and Chicken & Beef Training Treats) and will surely be a hit with your pooch. Behind some windows, there's more than one treat, which is a nice touch, as they can have one in the morning and one in the evening, or you can share them if you have multiple dogs like I do.

My older dogs Bailey and Toby love the treats in this Lily's Kitchen Advent calendar. Now that they're getting older, they can't quite crunch biscuits like they used to, but these meaty treats are soft enough to sink their teeth into. As a pet owner, I love that they include vegetables and quinoa, which adds an extra source of nutrition.

Best cheese fondue dog Advent calendar

Pooch & Mutt Cheese Fondue Dog Advent CalendarArabella Horspool/Yours.co.uk

Suitable for dogs 12-weeks and over, this Pooch & Mutt Cheese Fondue Dog Advent Calendar contains little triangular morsels of grain-free melt-in-the-mouth cheesy treats. They are small and easy for your pet to nibble through, no matter their age, plus they also contain turkey, collagen and probiotics.

Although the description states, "1 cheese wedge treat behind every door", a lot of the doors had two wedges in them, which was a nice surprise for my pups. The treats do have a strong cheesy smell, but that goes to prove that there's real cheese in them!

Things to consider when buying a dog Advent calendar

An Advent calendar for dogs makes a wonderful Christmas gift for your pet, however, there are a few things you should bear in mind before making a decision:

Preferences - Just like humans, dogs have certain flavours, smells, toys etc. that they prefer, so look out for some of your pet's favourite brands when choosing an Advent calendar.

Allergies and sensitivities - Is your dog allergic to anything or do they have a bad stomach or perhaps a skin condition? If so, always check the labels to ensure your'e not giving you pup anything that could aggravate their body.

Number of treats - A calendar that has multiple Christmas dog treats behind one window can be beneficial for owners that have multiple dogs or one big dog, and you can spread them out throughout the day or use the treats for training.
