Winter candles FAQs

Top tips for looking after your candles

If you want to get the most out of your candles, you've got to look after them. If you're after some candle care tips, we've got all the information you need, thanks to Yankee Candle.
Trim your wick
Keep your candle's wick at the length indicated on the instruction label. You can trim it if needed before relighting.
Allow to pool
Let the top layer of wax liquefy and pool to the edges to avoid tunnelling. If you're wondering how long this would take, Yankee Candle recommends that for every 1cm in diameter your candle measures, you burn it for 30 minutes.
Use a candle snuffer
Gently dowse the frame when you're done, rather than blowing it out. This will prevent smoking and stop wax from escaping the candle.

Why is the first burn of a candle so important?

The first burn is always the most crucial one. If you don't burn it for long enough, it will cause the wax to tunnel and it will remain like that for the rest of your candle's life. In the end, you'll find the wick at the bottom but with lots of wax at the sides that can't be burnt. To avoid tunnelling, make sure you burn your candle long enough to allow the wax to liquefy and melt away from the edges.

Do candles warm you up?

We know that you're probably looking for different ways to heat your home this winter, but unfortunately, candles aren't the answer. While they do provide a little heat, it won't be enough to fully warm you up. You'll need to have many, many candles lit at once for you to feel the same benefits as a heater.
