  • Flexible
  • Lightweight
  • Ideal for homes with pets

Cons

  • Not the easiest to put together

How did this product make your life easier?

Convenience and flexibility have to be my two buzzwords to describe the Vax Blade 4 Pet Cordless Vac.

Weighing just 3.1kg, it is so much more lightweight than any other vacuum I've used meaning there's no more lugging a heavy hoover up the stairs.

It's such a nifty little mover too, easily manoeuvring round tight corners, under the bed and in those hardest to reach places, including lots of the little crevices in my car that I can never normally manage with a standard-sized cordless vacuum but that this did easily and flexibly.

This flexibility is helped enormously by the brilliant variety of extra heads that come with the vacuum featuring tools that have been seriously well thought through for their practicalities. Normally I find myself squirrelling away most of the heads that come with a vacuum into some long-forgotten cupboard, having never really realised their purpose. But this was totally different.

Instead, each additional head came into its own from the textile tool that was a godsend at getting the fine hairs of our endlessly malting black and white cat off the sofa. Meanwhile, the tough dirt tool was ideal for seeing off an irritating trail of ground-in mud that my other half had stamped into the hallway straight from a muddy walk. And the crevice tool - a fairly standard addition - really got into those corners and allowed me to finally be rid of some tiny flecks of wallpaper I'd had lurking in the edge of the carpet since I decorated but had never been truly able to suck up and vanish with a vacuum.

The real stroke of genius however is the stretch hose, an extendable tool that allows you to get to those really difficult places including, as I discovered, blasting off the cobwebs from the ceiling.

Would you choose this product above all others on the market?

Compared to my old cordless vac that barely makes more than 15 minutes' running time I was really surprised and delighted that this vacuum wracks up an impressive 45 minutes making it ideal for the regular once-over hoovering of most houses. With just a three-hour recharge time too, it's not ridiculously long to wait if you need a little longer. Even better, the battery keeps going even when the dirt bin is full giving you the chance to just finish off the room before you have to go and empty the bin.

What's more after years of having to permanently press down the power button of my old vac as I hoovered (which hurt my hand after a while), I loved how autonomous this was, just getting on with a really powerful job with the press of one little button that goes with some serious force. In fact it's so powerful it pretty much leads you round the floor like a dance partner rather than having to heave-ho your way round the room, especially if you've got thick carpets.

What changes would you make to this product?

The only feature I feel this vacuum is missing in comparison to others is an anti-hair wrap technology as I did find just a few hoovers in and seemingly an entire wig's worth of my hair was wrapped around the bristles. It's easily sorted but I certainly noticed the absence of this feature.

It's also not the easiest to put together as I've still not quite discovered the very particular knack you need to have for removing the bin while the hose does take a couple of goes to click into place.

Would you recommend this product?

I really would. This Vax vacuum gives a powerful, punchy performance, suitable for all standard vacuuming needs - and a few besides. Easy to handle, low effort to manoeuvre and generally ready to go whenever you need it, I think it's especially well suited to busy houses with pets and muddy boots.
