Testing the product
As someone who loves to cook as a bit of downtime after work, the time it takes often puts me off making a nutritious dinner every evening, so I was excited to see if the Ninja Foodie FlexDrawer really did cook 65% faster than a fan oven as promised.
I also love to cook with plenty of oil (and sometimes butter) so cooking with little to no oil was something very new to me too, particularly when it came to making chips and other fried foods, and I was keen to see if I could achieve the same result in a healthier way.
The air fryer really couldn’t have been easier to set up and was very self explanatory to use. The first thing I decided to cook in my air fryer was some chips. I would usually spread some oven chips from the freezer out on a baking tray in the fan oven and wait around 25-30 mins for them to crispen up. Instead, I cut up some potatoes, seasoned them, popped them in the air fryer and had a little guess as to how long they’d take. I went for 180 degrees on the air fryer setting for 15 minutes. 10 minutes later, I gave them a check and they were already crispened up and ready to eat. I was sold, and went on to cook everything in there from crispy white fish to mediterranean vegetables and chicken. Getting used to the quick timings of the air fryer is something that you need to get used to, as I did find my potatoes or roasted veg cooked a lot quicker than my pan fried foods and I often did get the timings mixed up. I have noticed however many shops now provide air fryer cooking instructions as well as fan oven which is very handy when working out timings.
The biggest change it’s made to my lifestyle is the time it takes to cook dinner after work when i’m often rather tired and hangry. Where before I may end up with slightly soggy potatoes after 30 mins in a fan oven, I can now achieve crispy chips or potatoes in less than 15 minutes. I would definitely recommend this air fryer for families or anyone who doesn’t have much time to cook.
I did worry cleaning this was going to be a bit of a chore, but it really couldn’t be easier. Thanks to the non-stick nature of the inner drawers and trays, it easily wipes clean and the trays can be cleaned in the dishwasher, although for ease, I did tend to hand wash in the sink as it really did take seconds.
One of the main issues most people find with air fryers generally is the amount of space they take up. I personally have a very small kitchen, the type where you can only really fit one chef, so I too was concerned about the size. In all honestly, it is rather large and takes up a lot of room on the side as well as the depth the drawer would take up when pulling it out onto the side when the food – something I didn’t anticipate at first. However, once i’d had a bit of an organise of my cupboards and sides, it wasn’t too imposing.
The biggest inconvenience I found when cooking smaller foods such as roasted veggies and thin fries was that some of the foods fell between the gaps in the trays this made emptying the contents of the trays onto plates a little tricky as when cooking two different things in the dual compartments, you can’t just pour the whole thing out as you would with a smaller air fryer tray. Similarly, you can’t just scoop up smaller foods very easily with a serving spoon as it can force foods down the gaps or squish them into it. A workaround I had to use was removing the tray by protecting my hands with a tea towel before then scooping everything out.
Final verdict
Overall, this product delivers perfectly on timely cooking and minimal oil. While i’m a huge fan of this air fryer, unless you’re keen on regularly cooking large joints of meat or whole chicken, I find the separate drawers a little easier to cook with as you can simply empty the contents onto a plate or into a bowl easier.
