Deciding on your next craft project can be tricky, but with Halloween creeping up on us, it is the perfect time to get out your craft box and get creative with some homemade Halloween decorations, perfect for incorporating into your Halloween window displays.
If you count yourself as a Halloween lover, getting involved in the spooky season with some of our favourite DIY Halloween decoration ideas will be right up your street. Like many autumn craft projects, many of these crafts are great fun to get your grandchildren involved with, while others you might just want to do by yourself.
From macramé wall hanging designs and autumnal flower displays to crocheting pumpkins, there are plenty of crafts on our list to suit all ages and abilities.
Halloween decoration ideas
Mummy jam jar lanterns
An easy craft to do with the grandkids, these mummy jam jar lanterns require minimal materials. Pop in LED tealights for a safe way to light up your lanterns.
Halloween macrame wall hanging
For something a little bit different, this macrame wall hanging adds a modern twist to your Halloween decorations and is quick to put together.
Book page garland Halloween decoration idea
Although it might feel like sacrilege to cut up a book, we reckon it's worth it to create this adorable ghost garland. You can use this same idea to make book page pumpkins, cats or bats too.
Crochet pumpkins
If you're comfortable crocheting, what about making your own pumpkins? You can experiment with colours and yarn weights to create a unique look for your very own pumpkin patch.
Giant Halloween spiderwebs
How cool do these giant spiderwebs look? Better yet, despite how impressive they look, they aren't actually that difficult to make, either!
Pebble spiders
Another craft you can get younger ones involved with, these not-so-scary spiders will take just a few minutes to put together and can be used year after year.
Witches broom
We love how effective these witches' brooms look and the fact that they are made using materials mostly from nature.
Toilet roll Halloween decoration idea
A craft both kids and adults alike will enjoy doing together, put aside your toilet rolls for a few weeks and transform them into these fun characters.
Halloween tombstones
Make use of your empty cereal boxes and transform them into these creepy tombstones for a fun outdoor display to impress your neighbours.
DIY crescent moon wreath
While not strictly just for Halloween, if you're a big fan of a Christmas wreath or just want a subtle spooky touch, we reckon this moon wreath will do just the trick and can be decorated to your own taste.
Cute bats
A cute one to make with the grandkids and the chances are, you probably have everything you'll need already in the craft box! Simply grab some scissors, paper straws, black card and googly eyes (although you can also create your own out of paper or stickers).
Bloody candle
Spectacularly spooky but simple to make, a candle or two like this will really set the scene at the dinner table or in the living room whilst watching a spooky film. You can either make your own candles or (safely) add some wax from a red candle to the top of a white one.
Spiderwebs
Perfect for a spooky window display, homemade cobwebs will work a treat (you can pulll apart and stretch cotton pads/balls for this)/ For an extra finishing touch, add some little toy spiders or make your own out or pompoms and pipe cleaners.
Pumpkin flower display
Reduce, reuse, recycle, right? If you're after a more eco-based craft, you will love these pumpkin plant compositions! Simply cut open a pumpkin and scoop out the innards (you can use these for a tasty soup or cake), then fill it with your favourite festive flowers and plants. You may need to add some soil to the bottom or use a smaller pumpkin.
Paper signs
Add some Halloween slogans around the house by cutting out words in spooky fonts. You can get creative and draw them yourselves, or if you're not feeling confident, simply print out a template and use them as a guide. Experiment with felt, card and other exciting materials.
Witch doll
Stitch your very own witch using felt sheets and some thread. You can even add a little twig for the broom. Make as many as you like and try experimenting with different patterns and shapes for their dresses and hats - the opportunities are endless, so grab your sewing kit and get going!
Maple leaf ghosts
If you know somewhere you can get your hands on some maple leaves, have a go at painting them to create ghoulishly good ghosts. Once dry, add their little faces. Go gently with the paintbrush, as you don't want to accidentally tear them.
Painted pumpkins
Fun for all ages, painting can be a cathartic experience and paired with pumpkins, it makes the ultimate festive activity. It's a great alternative to carving, which can be more dangerous, much messier and time-consuming.
Spooky veg
For a more rustic approach, head to your local supermarket or farmer's market and purchase yourself some seasonal veg. Then pop some googly eyes on and Bob's your uncle! They take just a couple of seconds to make and you can turn them into delicious meals after.
Spray-painted pumpkins
Glam up your garden with some gorgeous spray-painted pumpkins. Go wild or choose a colour pallete and stick to it. Why not try using stencils to add some shapes and nice designs?
Halloween Scarecrow
Pulling out all the stops or competing with your neighbours? Make yourself one of these Jack-o'-lantern scarecrows, which are much easier to make than they look. You'll need some straw or hay, some old clothes and a pumpkin. Make it as big or small as you'd like.
Tiered tray display
If you've collected a lot of autumnal and Halloween decorations through the years, why not put them all together to create a fun display? These are brilliant if you only want to decorate one area, just to give your home a touch of spookiness, but in a stylish way.
