With a food processor you can primarily chop, cut, grate, and puree food, but also knead. Robust blades and a high wattage chop even nuts quickly; and you don’t need a big budget for a good food processor.

We’ve picked the best models on the market and give you tips on what to look for when buying a food processor.

How does a traditional food processor differ from a stand mixer?

Depending on the equipment and performance, both kitchen appliances are suitable for shredding as well as kneading, whipping or pureeing. But what exactly distinguishes the two machines?

A traditional food processor Is fundamentally different in that the drive protrudes from underneath into the bowl, whereas a stand mixer has a swivel arm that folds into the bowl from above. Attachments or dough hooks can be placed on the drive shaft of a food processor. Their bowls are usually smaller than those of stand mixers.

Chopping: Vegetables, such as onions or carrots, fresh herbs or even fruit - thanks to the strong stainless steel knife, a food processor chops everything really quickly and very finely

Grating: If you like grated cheese, you’ll save a lot of time and muscle strength with the grater disc supplied

Things to consider before buying a food processor

The bowls supplied with food processors are normally of low capacity. The standard is around one litre, while stand mixers can offer up to three litres in volume. In addition to volume, you should also think about the following:

The crowd - family household or single? Large stand mixers that take up a lot of space in your kitchen are only worthwhile for larger quantities.

Your own aspiration - how often will you use your food processor? Once a week or just a couple of times a year? If you use your food processor a lot, invest a little more in the purchase and buy a high-quality device.

Which functions are important to you? Do you primarily want to stir dough? Then perhaps consider a stand mixer instead. These are equipped with a foldable dough hook and are usually even better for kneading than a food processor.

If, on the other hand, you primarily want to shred vegetables, nuts and fruit, then you will certainly find the right food processor for you.

The strengths of a food processor are that it can shred, chop, beat and puree very well. No matter whether you’re making home-made salad dressings, sauces, peanut butter or perfectly chopped vegetables, a food processor is your first choice. Many devices are compact, but this does mean you compromise on capacity.

So if you'll primarily be using it to make cakes, then you might be better off choosing a stand mixer. These have a larger mixing bowl, excellent kneading hooks and are usually superior to food processors for kneading and stirring.
