There's a lot to consider when choosing a new duvet: the tog rating, the type of filling, the cost and the size, not to mention how warm or cool it's going to keep you. We've covered this in more detail in our FAQs section, but generally, for cooling duvets, you'll want to pick a duvet that has a tog rating of 4.5 or less. This is because the higher the tog, the warmer the duvet will be and those that sit around the 4.5 mark are considered to be cooling but still nice and snuggly.

With lots of different cooling duvets available on the market, it's hard to know which one to go for. That's why we've broken down the choices available for cooling duvets that'll keep you covered, help you sleep better and most importantly, stay cool.

Reviewed by Yours Product Writer, Rosie Floyd: "As someone that's a hot sleeper for all of the year, particularly in the summer, the Simba Summer Hybrid Duvet has been a godsend to me during this spell of warmer weather we've been having. I could feel how cooling it was from the moment I took it out of the storage bag it arrived in, and it's kept that cooling feeling every night I've gone to sleep under it since. FAQs - How to choose the best cooling duvet

Choosing the right tog

Firstly, what is tog? Tog is the measurement of warmth retention in a duvet that also measures the material's effectiveness in trapping warm air. Duvets can range in tog from 1 to 15 and the higher the tog, the warmer your duvet will be. To ensure you've got the coolest duvet for the job, you'll want to pick one with a low tog with a rating of 4.5 or less. According to Dreams, the most common duvet tog rating is 10.5 so if you're a hot sleeper, struggle in the warmer seasons or get night sweats, your usual duvet might not be best for you or for all year around.

Choosing the right filling

For your duvet, you can choose between synthetic or natural fillings, each of which comes with its own perks. When looking for the coolest options, a natural filled duvet is best. Using ethically sourced goose and duck feathers and down, a natural filling is more breathable and reduces the amount of moisture being trapped, keeping you drier at night. Choosing one with a higher percentage of down will provide 3-4 times more air circulation resulting in a more comfortable and easy breezy slumber. The next best option is a micro-fibre-filled duvet, great as a more affordable option that would be better suited if you prefer synthetic materials or have allergies. Sharing similar properties to 'down', micro-fibre has a finer and lighter feel compared to other synthetic materials and wicks moisture from the body. We tend to get sweatier beneath a synthetic duvet so the micro-fibre filling will work to keep you cooler and drier.

Cooling technology

Some cooling duvets, a number we've included on our list, come with patented thermo-regulating fabrics that will adjust to your temperature and work to keep you as cool as possible. Some use Stratos®, a material used by NASA in spacesuits that helps regulate your temperature by absorbing heat away from your body and then returning it to you if you happen to get a chill. This space tech makes your duvet super versatile for use all year round. There are also Aerelle® cool night fibres, embedded with semi-conducting minerals to dissipate heat and 37.5® Technology that helps keep the micro-climate next to your skin at an ideal relative humidity level of 37.5 per cent.

Other top tips for staying cool at night

If feeling hot keeps you up and bothered at night, we've got some top tips for sleeping on hot nights. These tips will help you cool down and feel less hot-heated with the situation too! Freeze a washcloth or pop a clean tea towel in the freezer before bed. You can use this as a cold compress to keep your face cool as you drift off to sleep. On a hot day, keep your blinds or curtains closed to stop any excess heat from coming through in time for bed. Switch up your position either to a starfish position for better aeration across your body or on your side to minimise your contact with the mattress which will absorb your body heat. Try not to cuddle up with a partner either as their heat could transfer to you and vice versa. Eat a lighter meal closer to bedtime so your body doesn't use as much energy to break down your food. You could even try some of the foods from Casper which will promote sleep, with some great options for late-night snacks too. Choose 100 per cent cotton or linen duvet cover sets, designed to promote airflow and moisture wick for a cooler sleep experience.
