The best portable air conditioning can be a safe saver for hot summers. We’re all aware that heatwaves are likely to return with a vengeance year after year. While it’s lovely to get a burst of sun and heat in the UK, our homes are not built for it. That’s where the best portable air conditioning can help to breathe cool air into your home. If it means not completely melting again, sign us up!

As the UK is privy to the cold and rain most of the year, our houses have been built to protect us from those elements. Great in the winter, but the insulation can make the summer that little bit sweatier. Who else is attached to their handheld fan? A portable air conditioner will cool the air by removing heat and moisture. A much more effective solution to fans that’ll just recycle and blow the warm air that’s already suffocating the room.

Best portable air conditioning at a glance

Portable ACs are not the easiest to buy in the UK. It’s no surprise that they become extremely popular as soon as the weather forecast hints at a heatwave. As a result, you’ll find most are out of stock or hard to find. While it might not be at the forefront of your mind when the weather is a little chillier, we’d recommend buying an air conditioning unit in the cooler seasons to ensure you have one ready and waiting for when it’s needed most.

We’ve shared the best portable air conditioning units to keep cool in the heat with a buyer’s guide to make sure you buy what you need at the right time.

Best three-in-one portable air conditioner

Best three-in-one portable air conditioner

This air conditioning unit from BLACK+DECKER gives three-in-one functionality as a fan, dehumidifier, and air conditioner. For us, this makes this great value for money as you can use it throughout the year. You can programme the controls with the LED display with three-speed settings, a 24-hour timer, and an energy-saving sleep mode. And with the convenient remote, you can control it from anywhere in the room.

Customer review: "This is my third portable air conditioning unit since I first bought one in 2005. It's also easily the best. Cooling is excellent, with the unit easily able to cool a single large room (living room) or three smaller rooms (two bedrooms and a hall). As with all portable air conditioning units, it is somewhat noisy, but it is still probably the quietest I've owned, despite having the highest cooling ability."

Pros

  • Three-in-one functionality
  • Value for money
  • Powerful performance
  • Remote-controlled
  • Easy to install

Cons

  • It's quite large and heavy, so takes up a reasonable footprint in the room

This one is a firm favourite - and for good reason! Whilst it is more expensive, this AC looks smart, has multi-functionality, four settings - auto, cool, fan, and dry - three speeds, and has a powerful 12,000 BTU. It will automatically adjust to the set temperature, removing moisture from the air for a fresher climate. With operation temperatures between 16-32 degrees Celsuis, you can even warm your room if you wish in the winter.

Customer review: "Do not hesitate on this purchase, this machine is unbelievable! Purchased at the beginning of June ready for the summer. At the beginning of July when we experienced the unprecedented heatwave, unbelievably this air conditioner pulled every ounce of heat from my lounge, I set it to cool on auto mode, and within seconds it swung into action, pumping freezing cold air into the room. Over the next 4 hours, it worked incredibly hard taking the temperature from 41°c to 18°c. I'd have paid double the price for this not only because it works but for the comfortable night's sleep I've had this summer."

  • Looks good
  • Remote-controlled
  • Powerful BTU
  • Option to swing

It features Real Feel Technology, designed to work simultaneously to both control humidity and reduce the room's temperature for optimal comfort.

At under £350, you can get this AC with three-in-one functionality as an air conditioner, dehumidifier, and fan. It only has two speeds but still has a clear display and remote control to set times and adjust the temperature. Slightly more compact, it'll take up less space in the room and is easy to install thanks to the expandable exhaust hose (up to 1.6m), though you will need to buy a window kit separately.

Customer review: "I bought this after looking around for air conditioners. This came up as the best option for price and features. It does an excellent job at cooling the room and easily cools by 5-9 degrees where the original room temp is 29-30 degrees. I also had a window adapter which is useful even for a window that swings out. I just tuck into the groove where the hinge opens and close a blind. Just as effective in my opinion. Worth the money and I'm sure if you are hot, you want to at least try it!"

Another fun feature we love is geo-fencing - it'll switch your AC on when you're close to home so you'll be welcomed into a cool home.

Customer review: "It works well, due to its specifications. 11,000btu is enough for a sizable room. It is quiet enough to run at night, especially on quiet mode. It is easy to control and I like the smartphone app, so I can monitor the temp. and humidity of a room from anywhere"

Buyer's guide: Best portable air conditioning

Are portable air conditioning units worth it?

Portable air conditioners give you the flexibility to be able to move your machine from room to room to cool it down effectively. They’re definitely a worthwhile purchase if you get particularly hot in the warmer months, and even more so if you spend most of your time in a south-facing flat or room. We understand the struggle!

However, it’s fair to say that air conditioning units are not the most affordable. Most portable air conditioning units are priced between £200 and £1,000. They're also not the most energy-efficient, especially compared to fixed, window-based ACs. Portable air conditioners use more energy to cool down air already in the room and cool the waste heat they generate in the process.

What to consider in a portable air conditioning unit

Portability

Air conditioning units are mains-powered, so if you plan to move it around your room, ensure the cable length allows you to do so. Air conditioning units with castors will also be easier to manoeuvre between rooms without you having to carry the unit as a whole.

Noise level

If you don’t want your air conditioner to be too noisy, opt for one with lower decibels. Most portable ACs are around 65dB on the highest power with those measuring 55dB or below being the quietest.

Ventilation

All portable air conditioners will require external ventilation and many come with an exhaust hose to go outside the window. You'll want to check if it comes with all the kit included or if this needs to be bought separately.

Output

The cooling capacity of an air conditioner is measured in British Thermal Units per hour (BTU). The higher the BTU, the larger the size of the room it’ll be able to cool. For example, an 8,000 BTU AC unit will be suitable for 100-300 sq. ft. rooms, whilst a larger 14,000 BTU will suit 450-700 sq. ft rooms.

Settings

Some units have different speed and timing settings. You’ll also find that some have the benefit of being two-in-one or three-in-one machines that’ll fan, cool, and dehumidify. If you’d find all three useful, you might consider one of these to be of better value for use year-round.

Energy efficiency

The energy efficiency of an air conditioner is measured by the ratio of the BTU per hour to the power input in watts. This provides an energy efficiency rating (EER) – the higher the rating, the more efficient the air conditioner.
