From keeping your laminate floors spotless to cleaning your oven, ironing is up there with one of those household chores we're always putting off, but getting yourself one of these best ironing boards could make your life a little easier.
If we could all afford someone to do our ironing for us, we doubt anyone would say no. Life's too short to be stuck behind an ironing board! As it isn't one of the most enjoyable cleaning chores in the world, it's definitely worth investing in a brilliant ironing board to make the job as easy as can be.
To help you make your decision, we've rounded up the best ironing boards available according to real reviews from real people. These ironing boards are lightweight, affordable, easy to use and many are adjustable, meaning it will perfectly match your height. We've also picked ironing boards which are easy to store away so they don't look an eyesore in your home.
What to look for in an ironing board
When deciding on the perfect ironing board for you, it's worth taking into account the following things:
How easy is to put up? There's nothing worse (or more painful) than trapping your hand in the legs of your iron or not being able to find the lever to move it up and down.
Does it easily store away? A chunky ironing board isn't as easy to store away compared to sleeker designs.
How sturdy is it when in use? You don't want your ironing board to be wobbling all over the place as you iron.
Weight and size - can you easily pick it up and do you have enough.
Is there an option to adjust the height? This is essential if you're particularly tall or short.
Types of ironing boards
Freestanding ironing board
Freestanding ironing boards are pretty standard and most people will have these in their homes. They will have metal legs (usually steel), a metal surface to iron on, and an ironing board cover. They are usually adjustable, so you can set it to suit whoever is using it. If made from mesh, the steam from the iron will penetrate through the cover and out through the holes.
Tabletop ironing board
Tabletop ironing boards are perfect for people who don't have loads of space, don't iron often or like to sit down while ironing. They're compact, lightweight and suited to people who like to sew, too.
Wall-mounted ironing board
If you're low on floor space but have a lot of wall space, a wall-mounted ironing board may be your best choice. It can be folded flat to the wall and only pulled down when it's needed, saving on space. As well as the traditional fixed type (included in our gallery above), you can also store your board on a wall mount if you like, as seen here.

Does a good ironing board make a difference?
Typically, the more features your ironing board has (e.g. a child lock, iron rest, multiple adjustable heights etc), the more expensive your ironing board is likely to be. While many of these features won't make a difference to your actual ironing, they are still handy to have and can either speed up the experience or make it a lot, well, smoother.

Review: "Excellent product. Sturdy, padded for extra support for the garment that you're ironing. Surface area of the ironing board is large enough for larger garments like curtains, and soft enough for silk scarfs and dresses. Best purchase I ever made."

Best ergonomic board
Minky is loved by cleaning gurus the world over, and this ironing board has some great features. We love the Ergo Rest, which makes ironing comfortable for right and left-handed use. The Prozone cover is 100 per cent cotton with heat reflective metallic coating and the Flex Guide prevents the ironing cord from getting tangled. What's not to like?
Review: "Received this today and have already used it. It was bought to replace a thirty-year-old board. I had just purchased a steam charging iron and felt it deserved a new board! Both of these have made ironing so much quicker and smoother. Delighted with this board at a very reasonable cost. It's not the lightest but you need a certain amount of weight in an ironing board and it is considerably lighter than the old one. The iron rest is good ergonomically. I took to it straight away. Also I can put it into a much higher position than my old one and as I'm quite tall this is helpful. It's also a good size, allowing you to iron a bigger surface at one go. I would recommend this board. It's good value for money."

Best wide board
This extra wide Argos ironing board makes the chore much easier, giving you plenty of space for shirts, pillow cases, duvet covers and more. It has a lovely geometric print cover and non-slip feet to keep it in place.
Review: "We paid a very reasonable price for this. It's a big ironing board but it's not heavy; I am only 5ft2 but can put it up and down no problem. It has a big wide ironing area, much easier to do shirts and t-shirts on. Also has a clip to hold the legs in place when it's folded up, which is a good idea. Very pleased."

Best quality board
If a wooden ironing board is your dream home appliance, look no further than Foppapedretti. A leader in Italian manufacturing since 1946, this classic and stylish wooden ironing board is pricey, but the quality is reflected in the cost. The frame is made of sturdy long-lasting solid beech with a poplar ply ironing board. The ironing surface is covered with a cotton cover coated with aluminium and a soft polyester lining to make ironing easier. It also features a heat-resistant rubber rest for the iron, which slides into the body of the board for storage. The board adjusts to three different heights for comfortable ironing and a shelf is incorporated for storing laundry. When folded, it takes up very little space, stands up on its own and moves easily thanks to the anti-scratch wheels. If you're an eco-friendly warrior, this will be right up your street.
Review: "My husband inherited a wooden ironing board many years ago and it finally gave up the ghost! I already have one of those larger ironing boards with the criss-cross ironing surface, but found it left imprints of the mesh on clothing, so decided to replace the existing one with another wooden one. I absolutely LOVE this ironing station! It's not your typical ironing board shape - much wider and quite a bit shorter, but along with the reflective cover, it halves my ironing time as the steam penetrates the clothes and is reflected back to the underside of anything I iron. It may appear expensive, but it's a beautifully constructed board and so easy to put up and put down. The iron plate retracts into the board for storage and is very sturdy. Worth every single penny!"

This table-top ironing board is an Amazon bestseller and is loved for its size and portability. If you sew, only get the ironing board out now and then or prefer to sit down, it's a great option. It's a small ironing board, lightweight, is easy to put up and down, and the felt pads protect whichever surface you're working on.
Review: "Bought this board for tabletop ironing when dressmaking. It was too much having a cutting table and full-size ironing board sitting out in my craft room. This board sits on my cutting board and takes up no room at all. It's sturdy and the legs fold out easily. It had a nice cover although it would have been nice for it to have a bit more padding under this. Also noticed the table has a little metal loop for hanging the board up when not in use. I have mine hanging on the inside of my walk-in cupboard door when not in use. Overall I'm pleased with this purchase."

Review: "Really pleased but I think we could have got away with a medium instead of large. Great space for the steam generator. Not sure how easy it is going to be to get a replacement cover once this wears out. Generally a good product and cheaper than some other major brands."

How big is a standard ironing board?
An average full-size ironing board is 54 inches long and 15 inches wide. You can also find more compact sizes which are handy if you have a smaller space.
Ironing board covers
You should select an ironing board cover that is well-padded, smooth, and burn-resistant. A reflective cover will generate more heat, helping you to get through your washing more quickly.
You could always grab an extra ironing board cover to put on top of the one that comes with your ironing board, for extra comfort and protection.
How often should you change your ironing board cover?
This completely depends on both how many people are in your household and how often you are ironing. For example, if you find yourself ironing once a week, we would recommend changing your ironing board cover every three years.
Keep an eye on your cover though as if it shows wear or tear earlier than this, then you will need to change your cover as soon as possible.
Furthermore, if you happen to get any stains or marks on your ironing board cover, you may need to use a good upholstery cleaner to clean it.
Best material for ironing boards
Steel is definitely your best bet when it comes to getting an ironing board that will last for a long time. Aluminium is a lighter material, but you'll really see the quality difference over time.
Laundry and ironing hacks
If you have a really specific space for your ironing board, you could even try making your own. Check out this tutorial, along with some great washing tips from YouTuber Rachel Talbott.
If you can't iron some of your garments but they still need smoothing out, try a steam iron to keep your more delicate clothes crease free.
