Best linen blackout curtains

Best blackout curtains: Private Blackout 100% Washed Linen Curtain with RingsCredit: La Redoute

These linen blackout curtains with leather-effect loops are both stylish and chic. Gone are the days when blackout curtains had to be dreary and heavy. These Private Blackout 100% Washed Linen Curtain with Rings from La Redoute are stunning and would be lovely in a neutral bedroom.

Customer review: "These are absolutely the loveliest linen curtains I have brought so far. The “raw linen” colour is pale and soft with that gorgeous crumpled texture. The back-out lining gives them more substance and thickness than your average linen curtains, which can feel a bit flimsy. The leather tabs are an added interest, which I love. These curtains are quite an investment, and I was hesitant about the price, but they are definitely worth it and look fabulous against my “elephant breath” walls."

  • Modern
  • Linen
  • Statement curtains

Cons

  • Premium
Material:100 per cent linen
Colours:12 Colours
Sizes:W140 x Drop 180cm up to W140cm x Drop 350cm

Benefits of blackout curtains

• Blackout curtains filter out light and help keep your room darker for longer. They're a great solution, too if you don't find an eye mask at night a comfortable alternative

• Blackout curtains can help reduce heat loss and block sunlight, meaning you can save on your energy bills with wasted heat and having to ramp up the heaters and fans

• Due to their thicker material, blackout curtains can help filter out noise, creating a quieter sleep environment that'll, in turn, improve your sleep quality

The benefits of a good night's sleep include an overall improvement in your health and wellbeing, with improved heart health, a stronger immune system, reduced stress, improved attention and concentration and more positive mental health.

What to consider when buying blackout curtains

Lining and material

The lining and material of your curtains are the most important factor in determining how much natural light will be prevented from shining through. When buying blackout curtains, you want to look for those made with a tightly woven or dense fabric. For example, thick cotton or polyester, velvet or suede.

For added benefits, some curtains can include an insular layer for improved room temperature regulation. This helps to keep your home warm in the winter and cooler in the summer months.

Colour

Luckily blackout curtains don't mean you're limited to black curtains! While there are dark shades available, you can choose from a range of designs to best suit your space. So long as your curtains have the correct material and lining, the design won't affect the light-blocking capabilities of your curtains.

Heading style

For heading styles, you can choose between eyelet curtains and pencil pleat curtains.

Eyelet curtains hang from the pole, threaded through the metal rings at the top of the curtain fabric. This creates dramatic pleats that cascade down.

Pencil pleat curtains create neat folds of fabric in close pleats at the top of the drape, attached to the pole by curtain rods or tracks.

The heading style you choose is completely down to preference in what you would prefer in the design of your curtains.

Size

Before you buy your blackout curtains, you need to make sure you measure first to get the correct size for your window and/or curtain pole.

To measure, we advise using a metal measuring tape for accurate measurement taking.

For the width, use the tape measure to measure the length of the curtain pole, excluding the finials. If you don't yet have a pole up, measure the window and add 20cm to either side.

To measure the length, you want to measure from the top of the curtain pole down to your length of choice. The better the window coverage, the better the blackout!
