We’ve all got spare yarn, patterns and needles lying around that we don’t use anymore so why not put it to good use with Age UK? They’re wanting knitters across the country to donate their unwanted knitting supplies so their knitting groups can keep vulnerable older people warm over winter.

These knitting groups are dotted around the UK and are currently looking to knit scarfs for the homeless, bonnets for premature babies and bobble hats for Innocent’s Big Knit campaign where knitters create tiny bobble hats for Innocent smoothie bottles with 25p of every bottle sold going to Age UK. Since 2013, the campaign has raised £2.4m to help end loneliness among older people.

The groups are also raising money for The Night Out, where volunteer knitters will be able to spend an evening together at the service as a treat for their efforts in helping those in need, especially in the Winter when a lot of elderly people may be vulnerable to the cold.

Age UK works to provide a vital lifeline for many older people when the temperatures drop, supporting local and national projects which provide emergency cold weather support. The UK has the second-worst rate of fuel poverty in Europe after Ireland, with 3,000 people needlessly dying each year because they can't afford to heat their homes and keep warm.

If you would like to donate any of your knitting supplies to Age UK’s knitting groups, send your knitting needle, yarn and pattern donations to Age UK Kensington and Chelsea, 1 Thorpe Close, London W10 5XL.

Alternatively, if you fancy getting involved and knitting some small bobble hats for Innocent, visit their website to join the Big Knit.
