It's been shocking to see the devastation caused by the catastrophic bushfires in Australia and the damage the fires have caused so far has been heartbreaking. The latest figures show that since September 2019, 15.6 million acres of Australia has been burnt killing 25 people and destroying almost 2,000 homes. Australia's animals have been affected the worst with an estimated one billion animals being lost to the fires, causing scientists to fear how this could affect the eco-system. Even though we're on the other side of the world, there's plenty we can do to help the crisis. Here are just some ideas.
NSW Rural Fire Service
Local fire services across Australia have been working tirelessly to fight the fires while putting their own life in danger on the frontline.

Salvation Army Australia
Volunteers for the Salvation Army are currently on the ground supporting the work of the fire fighters and helping those affected by the fires. The volunteers will also be staying there after the fires have stopped to help those left homeless.

WIRES Wildlife Rescue
Since September, it is estimated that one billion animals have been killed by the bushfires. It is also estimated that from the animals that have survived, 800 million have been affected, losing their habitats with many suffering from bad injuries and burns. By supporting WIRES, you'll be helping to rescue the sick, injured and orphaned wildlife in Australia.
RSPCA bushfire appeal
The RSPCA Australia are working with the local authorities, vets and emergency services to provide much needed urgent care for the injured animals in need and will continue to do so even when the fires have stopped. They're also helping domestic animals affected by the smoke.
Knit protective pouches, mittens and nest for injured animals
Rather knit something to help the animals? Over 3,000 UK based crafters have joined a community to help wildlife injured in the bushfires. Volunteers can knit, sew or crochet mittens, pouches or beds for the animals. Just visit the Paws Across the Ocean Facebook page for group updates and patterns.
