Finding the best anti-ageing moisturiser for your mature skin can be a tricky task. I don't know about you but I'm in my mid-forties now and have noticed quite a few changes in my skin as I've got older. Most notably my skin has got a lot more sensitive. I often suffer from red and irritated patches on my cheeks. I've also noticed that the skin on my face has got a lot drier. I now get patches of dry skin around my nose and cheeks. I've also noticed those natural signs of ageing, more pronounced wrinkles around my eyes, some skin pigmentation and dark spots on my cheeks and deeper wrinkles across my forehead.
When I was younger, I was able to get away with a very basic skincare routine; a mere wash, cleanse, and a slap of sun cream kept me looking fresh-faced. But now that I'm older my skin requires a little more TLC. I'm certainly not interested in going down the road of Botox or fillers and in a way I quite like my laughter lines, but I am looking for a moisturiser for mature skin that will leave my skin looking fuller, more hydrated and give me a natural glow. A good skincare routine paired with the use of an LED light therapy mask could keep you looking more youthful for longer, without the need for painful and expensive cosmetic procedures.
I spoke to skincare expert Dr Sophie Shotter, about the importance of having a good skincare routine and her top skin tips for different ages (which are summarise at the end of the article).
She explained, “Just as you may need to adapt your exercise routine or diet with age, the same needs to be done for your skincare routine. Your skin undergoes various changes throughout your life, which can be influenced by environmental factors like sun exposure, stress, and pollution, as well as the natural process of ageing."
“So, while it is important to build a sustainable routine that works for your skin, it is also key to make sure your routine evolves to address these changing needs," she added.
We've taken all these factors into consideration, and done all the hard work for you by putting all the moisturisers below to the test. All you need to do is choose the ones that will suit your skin best.

With so many different lotions and potions on the market containing a whole host of ingredients such as; ceramide, hyaluronic acid, collagen, glycerin and retinols- it's hard to know where to start. That's why we've provided a easy to understand guide to all these ingredients below, you know exactly which ones to look out for.
How we tested these anti-ageing moisturisers for mature skin
While testing these moisturisers, some of the main criteria we considered are – how well it absorbs into the skin, ability to keep skin hydrated and moisturised for long, how heavy or light the cream feels, whether the formula feels creamy, oily, watery or soft, if it has any fragrance, whether it is suitable for sensitive skin and if it left us with a natural glow and minimised wrinkles.

We looked at added benefits like collagen, anti-ageing properties, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, SPF protection and more. We also considered whether the products are vegan, cruelty free or organic and overall how well it caters to mature skin and its needs.
Most of the products in this article have been tested by real women who are part of our editorial team or women we know personally. The moisturisers that have been tested are clearly labelled as ‘tested and reviewed’. The rest of the products are currently being tested and the reviews that will soon be updated.
We've curated a selection of top moisturisers specifically formulated for mature skin. Consider this your cue to indulge in some much-needed self-care with a new skincare product tailored to your skin's needs.

Best moisturiser for mature skin overall

Skincare products often come with a hefty price tag, but this moisturiser stands out as it's not only loved by A-list celebrities but also budget-friendly. If you've found that with menopause, your skin has changed and become dry, this thick and moisturising cream absorbs well without feeling greasy. It's also fragrance-free, which is much gentler on the skin. That's why it's our top pick for the best moisturiser for mature skin. CeraVe has garnered praise from celebrities like Blake Lively, Olivia Wilde, and Emily Ratajkowski. And, if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for us.
CeraVe has developed this CeraVe Moisturising Cream for Dry to Very Dry Skin with dermatologists. The brand describes it as a rich yet non-greasy cream. It has been formulated with patented MVE Technology to ensure a continuous release of hydration for up to 24 hours. MVE (MultiVesicular Emulsion) Technology is a controlled-release delivery system used in skincare products to provide long-lasting hydration by releasing ingredients gradually over time.
The ingredients support anti-ageing by hydrating and strengthening the skin barrier, reducing moisture loss and improving elasticity. Antioxidants like tocopherol (Vitamin E) protect against free radical damage, while hyaluronic acid and glycerin deeply hydrate. Ceramides, cholesterol and phytosphingosine restore the skin’s natural barrier, promoting a smoother, youthful appearance.
The CeraVe Moisturising Cream was tested by Ella Croft, SEO Content Strategist for several brands at Bauer Media and she said, “CeraVe is one of the few moisturisers that don't trigger my sensitive skin and eczema, I've been using it for years and I haven't found anything that beats it! It's very moisturising but not greasy like a lot of other moisturisers. It absorbs quickly into the skin, leaving my skin feel soft all day. I buy a big tub and it lasts me several months, and that's using it as a hand cream and on my body every day, not just my face!”
“However, one downside is that product is not vegan and it's not cruelty free as it's sold in markets that require animal testing. But apart from this I am yet to find a moisturising cream that works better and it suitable to be used on the whole body,” she adds.

Best moisturiser for mature, dry skin

E45 has been one of the go-to brands for people who suffer from dry and itchy skin. This dermatologically tested cream is a great option for people who suffer from dry skin. In truth, our tester didn't see E45 as "anything other than treating my child's eczema" - and often opts for something a little more luxurious in a moisturiser.
However, as she had a dry patch on her face, our tester decided to give it a try. She found the formula both lightweight and easy to absorb. And after a few uses, the skin looked healthier, plump and hydrated. This is due to the fabulous ingredients, from hyaluronic acid (which promotes wound healing and is a firm help when it comes to anti-ageing remedies), hydrating seed oils and vitamin E for a soothing finish.
On the whole, this cream receives good reviews. However, there are some online reviews about it not being so effective on combination skin, as one user comments: "The moisturiser felt a little drying on my forehead but worked well on my nose and cheeks." A minority of reviews have commented that it has a drying effect on their skin.
We also found that a little bit goes a very long way. So, you'll certainly get more bang for your buck.
Pros
- Dermatologically tested
- Long-lasting hydration throughout the day
- Protects your skin from drying out
Cons
- A minority of reviews comment that it had a drying effect (we did not)

Best moisturiser for mature women with SPF

The Absolute Collagen Deep Lift Day Cream SPF30 is another moisturiser formulated with collagen-boosting ingredients. In case you wondering, collagen is an ingredient that enhances your skin's natural radiance and youthfulness. What we love about this product is that it also contains SPF 30, making it the perfect moisturiser to wear daily but an especially good choice for warmer weather. Our tester loved the rich consistency of Absolute Collagen's Deep Lift Day Cream and was impressed at how quickly it absorbs into the skin: "It smells wonderful and leaves my skin feeling fresh and smooth."
SPF effectively protects against harmful UV rays, helping prevent sunburn, premature ageing, and skin cancer while allowing for adequate vitamin D synthesis. Although other moisturisers on our list have SPF 15, we recommend SPF 30 (found in this pick) for the best protection. Shielding your skin from harmful UV rays is crucial for having healthy skin. After all, sun damage can accelerate collagen breakdown and speed up the ageing process, which is another ingredient found in this product. Also, found in this day cream is niacinamide, which nourishes and plumps skin - reducing wrinkles.

- Effective and deep hydration
- SPF protection and UVA/UVB

Best sustainable moisturiser for mature skin

Weleda Skin Food is an intensely nourishing, anti-ageing cream that helps restore the skin’s barrier, boosts moisture and promotes cell renewal for smoother, firmer skin. With natural extracts like chamomile, pansy and rosemary, it soothes irritation, reduces fine lines and enhances radiance, making it ideal for mature skin.
Organic ingredients in skincare offer a natural and sustainable approach to nourishing and rejuvenating your mature skin, all while being free from synthetic or harsh chemicals and pesticides. Skin Food by Weleda is one of the most popular organic moisturisers, with one being sold every 11 seconds worldwide. As a B Corp, Weleda reduces waste, offers recyclable packaging, and ensures workers are treated fairly. It is also cruelty-free and certified by Natrue for natural and organic cosmetics.
Our tester liked this Skin Food, finding it very hydrating but incredibly thick. Though she said it "may be a little too thick for the daytime, but it does have a nice, clean scent." There are so many harsh ingredients in skincare at the moment - and if you're looking for something a little more stripped-back and herbal, Weleda is a good choice. Our tester always welcomes more natural products - so appreciates that the ingredients are organic and sustainably sourced and that this product is cruelty-free (and vegan). This is a great thick all-around moisturiser, and a little goes a long way. However, we found that with this tube size, it's best to keep it for your face; otherwise, it will run out pretty quickly. However, at this affordable price, you may be able to purchase two tubes.
Pros
- Award-winning and 100 per cent certified natural
- Organic, sustainable and ethically sourced
- Nice natural scent which can be used all over the body
Cons
- Only one size is available (75ml)
- If you apply too much, it feels a little heavy on the skin
Important ingredients | Beeswax, chamomile flower extract, cholesterol, pot marigold extract, rosemary lead extract, sunflower seed oil, sweet almond oil |
Quantity | 75 ml |
Vegan | Yes |
Skin type | For dry and rough skin |
- Anti-ageing - Chamomile flower extract, cholesterol, coumarin, pansy extract, pot marigold flower extract, rosemary leaf extract, sunflower seed oil, sweet almond oil.

- Soothing - Chamomile flower extract, pot marigold flower extract, rosemary leaf extract.

Best moisturiser for sensitive, mature skin

theoutset.com
When it comes to celebrity beauty brands, we're usually cautious. The market is full of actresses and singers promoting 'must-have' skincare products that promise a youthful glow, but they often fall short. So, when we heard about Hollywood superstar Scarlett Johansson's beauty brand, The Outset, we were sceptical. Scarlett, best known for her role in the Marvel movies, launched this brand to simplify skincare. The Outset Nourishing Squalane Daily Moisturizer claims to outperform hyaluronic acid after 24 hours and improve the skin barrier in just two weeks.
We were pleased to see that it is vegan, fragrance-free and non-clogging formula. Eager to try it ourselves, we've been using this cream daily for almost a month and are thrilled with the results. It has a rich, luxurious consistency that feels deeply hydrating without making the skin oily or heavy.
This cream also serves as a perfect base for makeup, absorbing well into the skin and leaving a soft, smooth finish. We're not the only fans—hundreds of five-star reviews online echo our enthusiasm. One user with persistent hormonal acne found relief with The Outset moisturiser, noticing healthier, more hydrated skin in just a week. After struggling with ineffective treatments, they were amazed by how quickly their skin was restored. Another user says that they live in a dry climate - and this Outset cream "saved their skin". Skincare enthusiasts rave that this is the best moisturiser they've ever used, and this writer wholeheartedly agrees.

Why should invest in a good night cream? The answer is because while you sleep, your skin begins healing. Best hypoallergenic moisturiser for mature skin

www.boots.com
The Aveeno Face Calm+Restore Oat Gel Moisturiser is formulated with prebiotic oat and calming feverfew. These hypoallergenic ingredients are great for sensitive skin because although it is hydrating and can help repair the skin from sun damage, it is incredibly gentle. We could not believe how lightweight this cream is - and it absorbs quickly, too. Though our Aveeno tester does prefer a thicker cream for the evening, this is now their "go-to moisturiser" for their morning routine.
There is a slight natural "oaty" scent that we love, but it's very subtle. Not only has this Aveeno pick been dermatologist tested, but it's not going to clog up pores. Though a lightweight formula, it does make your skin feel very soft, says our Aveeno tester. Best moisturiser for combination, mature skin

Olay Beauty Fluid Face and Body Moisturiser is part of a range of skincare for combination skin. It can be used not only on your face but on your whole body, although we are a little sceptical of how long the small bottle would last if you regularly used it all over. However, as a daily moisturiser, it's incredibly lightweight and hydrating for the skin, which is great for ageing, combination skin.
We first noticed how fluid this cream was, especially in comparison to some of the other richer moisturisers on the market. We liked that a little goes a long way, and it absorbs well. This budget-friendly moisturiser is a fantastic option for women with combination skin, providing hydration without heaviness.
Customers like to go back to this old favourite after finding modern moisturisers a little oily and causing spots. Best moisturiser giftset for mature skin

Skincare products are a great option when you are looking for a gift for close friends or family. Whilst we wouldn't recommend buying skincare for distant relatives (because you may not know their skin type or preferences), purchasing a skincare gift set for your sister or best friend is a beautiful gift - especially when it's Olay. In our testers opinion, you can't "beat Olay", especially if you have mature skin and you're looking to dive into the world of skincare. It's a fabulous option for many.

your skin for 24 hours, and Olay claims you can see visible improvements in fine lines and wrinkles. Thanks to the hydration powers of glycerin and panthenol, rest assured, your skin will feel plump.
So whether you are looking to buy it for yourself or a friend, Olay is a safe pick, loved by many women. Our tester liked that the day cream smells "fresh and zesty"; a fragranced cream may contain something like linalool - and though lovely to smell, can be an irritant and is not recommended for those with very sensitive skin. Though, the night cream has no fragrance, it's still not safe for this skin type. Our tester got this set for her mum and ended up purchasing one for herself.

Moisturiser for mature skin ingredients explained
Choosing the right moisturiser for mature skin can feel overwhelming, especially when faced with a long list of complex ingredients you’ve never heard of. Don’t worry—we’re here to simplify it for you. Understanding the benefits of key active ingredients can help you find a cream perfectly suited to your needs. From reducing wrinkles and brightening skin to stimulating cell turnover and promoting collagen and elastin production, specific ingredients play vital roles in combating signs of ageing. Let’s focus on the ones proven to help reverse age-related skin changes.
What is Ceramide?
Ceramides are lipids (fats) naturally found in the skin that are essential for maintaining health and hydration. In skin care, ceramides provide long-lasting hydration and strengthen the skin’s protective barrier. It also helps protect against environmental damage.
What is Hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that is essential for preserving skin, joint, and eye health. Acting as a humectant, it binds water to keep the skin hydrated and plump, making it a popular anti-ageing ingredient in moisturisers and serums. Hyaluronic acid works with collagen to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Think of it as scaffolding to support the skin’s structure. Since our natural levels decrease with age, supplementing it helps maintain hydration, elasticity and overall skin vitality.
Does skincare containing Collagen actually work?
Collagen is a crucial protein that acts as a building block for bones, nails and hair. As we age, collagen levels naturally decline, leading to reduced skin elasticity and vitality. While collagen in skincare products may not directly replenish skin collagen, supplementing with hydrolysed collagen peptides can help improve skin elasticity and hydration. Collagen supplements are animal-derived and need to be taken consistently for lasting effects, as they combat collagen depletion over time, enhancing skin health.
What is Glycerin?
Glycerin is a synthetic humectant, a carbohydrate known as a sugar alcohol, that helps the skin retain moisture. It works by drawing moisture from the environment and binding it to the skin’s surface. Though it occurs naturally in plants, most glycerin is produced by hydrolysing fats and oils. Widely regarded as one of the most effective humectants, glycerin helps keep the skin moisturised and enhances its ability to absorb moisture from the air. It also has protective properties, shielding the skin from irritants and supporting its restorative functions.
What is Retinol?
Retinol is a powerful anti-ageing ingredient and a derivative of Vitamin A, backed by strong research supporting its effectiveness. Retinol stimulates fibroblast cells in the skin, responsible for producing collagen, elastin, hydration, and supporting cellular turnover. As we age, these cells slow down, leading to visible signs of ageing. By boosting fibroblast activity, retinol helps increase collagen and hyaluronic acid production, resulting in skin that appears firmer, more hydrated and youthful.
A comprehensive guide to looking after your skin
To help improve your knowledge of your skin needs, Dr Sophie Shotter and the skincare brand Absolute Collagen have shared some top tips as well as fantastic information you need to know for each decade of your life.
20s - Now’s the time to start wearing SPF
Daily use of SPF is essential for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. Use a moisturiser that has an SPF factor of 30; this will help stop any premature signs of ageing. SPF factor of 30 blocks out most harmful UV rays (97 per cent) but still gives your skin vitamin D.
30s - Say hello to vitamin A and eye cream
At thirty, you’ll likely be starting to notice some subtle signs of ageing, like fine lines and a few wrinkles. Vitamin A, also known as a Retinoid, can help with this by improving the appearance and elasticity of your skin. Now is the time to slowly introduce Retinoids into your routine once a week, using a low percentage to start and building up to applying a few times a week.
This is also a great time to start using an eye cream, which will help nourish the thinnest and most sensitive part of the face – the undereye.
40s - Hydration, Hydration, Hydration
When you hit forty, your skin will begin to droop, thin, dry and feel more sensitive. You may notice that this is when you need to up your skincare routine, especially for those approaching or in peri-menopause. Peri-menopause can lead to various skin changes, including reduced collagen production.
Increasing your hydration is essential, so make sure to use hydrating moisturisers and serums. Now is the time to introduce more nourishing products, such as night creams ( we love the moisturising night cream on our list).
50s & 60s - Time to shake it up
By now, you have become a seasoned professional in what works for your skin. However, sometimes, it's easy to get stuck in your old ways, and this isn't necessarily a good thing when it comes to skincare.
Trying new skincare products can help address evolving skin concerns and adapt to changing needs, ensuring optimal nourishment and rejuvenation for a radiant, youthful complexion.
When it comes to adding new ingredients or products into your routine, focus on targeting specific concerns.
70s - Back to basics
At this age, your skin is much more sensitive, so it is recommended to go completely fragrance-free, avoiding any products that might cause irritation or a reaction to your skin. This is when products that contain natural and organic ingredients like Aveeno or Weleda are fantastic choices.
