Living in a hard water area gives you a unique set of obstacles, from causing your appliances to wear quicker to making shampooing less effective – which is why we’ve found hard water shampoo that’ll help you make the most out of showers. We spoke to Moe Harb, the resident hair expert at Beauty Club London, about the impact of hard water on shampoo and your hair. After all, washing your hair is, by far, the best way to show appreciation for your frizz, waves or curls.
However, minerals in hard water (such as calcium and magnesium) can damage your hair, no matter what type you have. Over time, these pesky minerals will outstay their welcome. Not only do they make soap lathering and rinsing a challenge, but they also stick to your hair and scalp. If you’ve noticed your hair becoming a little dull, lifeless and dry recently, it may be due to the hardness of your water. Armed with the best hard water shampoo, these minerals are sure to meet their match.
Best hard water shampoo at a glance
Of course, you may be thinking: I’ve found a great shampoo for my hair type – why change? For example, you may have (finally) found the ideal shampoo for your curls. But, the big problem with hard water is that it builds up over time, wash by wash “making it harder for moisture and nourishing products to penetrate.” Your hair will be stripped of all moisture – left to slowly dull, tangle and feel irritated. In need of a little TLC? Hard water shampoo is the perfect remedy.
Below, we’ve found some of the best shampoos for hard water for all hair types. These shampoos have been specially formulated to counteract all of these nasties building up in your hair. They’ll help give your hair an extra-deep clean, which will, in turn, restore your hair’s softness, shine and manageability. I live in the Test Valley in the south – a hard water area (so, I know the struggle) and have personally tested quite a few picks in our round-up.

Best hard water shampoo for curly or textured hair
www.superdrug.com
Not only does it eliminate dandruff and conquer dry scalp irritation, but this Guava Scalp Relief Shampoo from Cantu will help stop the build-up of hard water minerals in their tracks. Yes - believe it or not, the formula has been enhanced with apple cider vinegar, an acidic ingredient, to tackle the alkaline nature of the leftover calcium build-ups in your hair. This, of course, is alongside cleansing and clarifying agents to banish stylish product residue for good. Cantu is a go-to brand for those of us with curly and/or textured hair, and it will help with dandruff, too.
Piper has been using Cantu's range for a few years now - and decided to give this Guava Shampoo a try to help with the hard water and product build-up in her curly hair...
"I was lucky enough to try this clarifying shampoo from Cantu - and I am impressed. I've used their Curling Cream in the past - and it helps bring out my curls - without a doubt. I've started using hair oils (such as the HASK Repairing Argan Oil) recently to give my hair a little boost (when I can't be bothered to wash it); there comes a time to banish any product residue that may be making my hair feel greasy or weighed-down. So, I sometimes turn to this product to sort me right out. There are probably better products on the market - but, I am reassured with the blend of ingredients, that this is OK to use at least twice a week if you use products and/or live in an area where the water is hard. I live in the Test Valley, so the struggle is real. This shampoo helps my hair shed any pesky minerals and excess oils. With the right conditioner, it's a good tool to have."
Pros
- With apple cider vinegar, ginger, guava tea, tree oil and turmeric
- Provides intense moisture and nourishes dry, itchy scalps
- Formulated for all hair types/textures - but we recommend for curls
- Removes product and mineral build-up in just one wash
Cons
- Contains perfumes/fragrances - not to be used regularly
Important ingredients | Apple cider vinegar, disodium EDTA, ginger root extract, glycerin, guava extract, menthol, salicylic acid, tea tree, turmeric |
Quantity | 400 ml |
Suitability | For natural curls, coils and waves |
Free | No parabens, alcohol, silicone-free, sulphates |

Recommended by our expert
The Malibu C Hard Water Wellness Shampoo has been recommended by our expert, Moe Harb - resident hair expert at Beauty Club London, for its clarifying properties. She says that it's "great at tackling hard water buildup without stripping natural oils from your hair". And, we have to agree. It's been formulated to hydrate, gently cleanse and preserve the vibrancy of your hair, even in the hardest of waters. Plus, if you colour your hair, it will help with any discolouration you've been experiencing. It's vegan and sulphate-free, too - which we like.
Reviewers on Amazon seem to like Malibu C's offering, saying it cleans the hair (and scalp) gently and many have noticed a difference in their hair since using it. One customer says that they moved to a hard water area recently and noticed their hair becoming coarse and brittle. After using this Malibu C Shampoo, their hair feels sleeker and not too frizzy, either. Another says it's a lifesaver for greasy hair, also, but recommends using a hydrating conditioner with it. Customers seem to use it once a week to get rid of the mineral build-up in their hair.
However, some customers are unsure about how good value for money it is.
Pros
- Perfect defence against dry, dull, discoloured and damaged locks
- Without any harsh chemicals, parabens and sulphates - hooray!
- 100% vegan with top-notch cleansing capabilities and a sweet aroma
- Hydrating and protective formula against problems from hard water
Cons
- Some customers feel that it is not great value for money
Important ingredients | Citric acid, disodium EDTA, flaxseed extract, glucose, panthenol, rice protein, various surfactant agents |

Best hard water shampoo for a shine
Another suggestion from Moe from Beauty Club London is the Redken Hair Cleansing Cream is a powerfully formulated shampoo to tackle super hard water areas. Not only does it give you an irresistible shine, but it removes product residue, dry shampoo, mineral buildup, excess oil and even pollution in one swift clean. Not only that, it's also a specialised dandruff shampoo. (What can't it do?) Yes - it comes with pyrithione zinc to help fight and control dandruff. You can even massage it into dry hair - just leave it in for five minutes, though.
Reviews on Amazon are mostly positive - saying that this shampoo smells lovely, and helps their hair feel soft and clean. Most importantly, it's said to remove build-ups and bring back some volume to the hair. Some customers find it excellent - cleaning their scalp well and leaving their hair soft. You only need a small amount - so it lasts a little long than you'd expect. It can tackle anything from hairspray to hard water minerals with ease...
Some customers found it dried out their hair a little - so, we recommend using it in conjunction with a hydrating conditioner with shea, argan or coconut. For those with dry or damaged hair, we'd probably recommend the Green People Intensive Care Shampoo instead.
Pros
- Removes dry shampoo, product build-up, hard water and excess oil
- Features fruit-based AHAs and cleaning complex for a deep clean
- Complete with a specialised ingredient to help fight dandruff
- Professional-strength shampoo made for all hair types and textures

Best hard water shampoo for restoring volume
If your hair is feeling a little flat and lifeless, perhaps the Sea Magik Pink Salt Shampoo could help. It's volumising and clarifying with plenty of feel-good benefits—too many to mention. With the essential oil blend, you will feel uplifted and happy after your deep clean, ready to tackle any day ahead. The finely ground pink salt inside exfoliates the scalp and removes any product buildup and hard water minerals for the best-feeling hair. It's a triple threat: deep cleans, adds volume and removes build-up. It can be used as a daily shampoo or once or twice a week clarifying spa treatment for your hair.
From the hundred reviews on Amazon, the Sea Magik Shampoo is well-liked - with an average 4.5/5 star rating. Many customers enjoy the quality, scent and shine it gives your hair. One customer calls it "fabulous" and says it leaves hair "squeaky" clean, soft and shiny. Plus, it's said to get rid of products from your hair. Hard water shampoo FAQs
How does hard water affect my hair – and how can I save it?
Needing extra advice? Moe Harb from Beauty Club London has the best advice for all hair types.
Hard water can be problematic for those with fine or thinning hair, says Moe. Unfortunately, thinning hair is more prone to build up. These tricky minerals can weigh fine hair down, “making it look limp and lifeless”. Moe suggests using a clarifying shampoo regularly to restore volume.
However, hard water “poses an even greater challenge” for curly or textured hair. Hard water worsens curly hair’s (already) dry structure, increasing chances of frizz, tangles and breakage. For curly or texture hair, Moe recommends “a gentle sulphate-free chelating and clarifying shampoo” alongside a deep conditioner (ideally containing shea or argan) to rehydrate the hair.
As for colour-treated hair, the mineral build-up causes "colour to fade more quickly and leave bleached hair looking brassy or dyed hair looking dull,” says Moe. Not ideal if you’ve just had your hair done. Blondes beware – hard water can bring out those undesirable reddish and orangey tones in your hair. Moe suggests a colour-safe clarifying shampoo, which we’ve included in our round-up - and a shower filter which will preserve the longevity of your colour.
Overall, Moe recommends choosing a hydrating and nourishing hard water shampoo, which can tackle the build-up, “without stripping natural oils from your hair”. Remember: consistency is key – and can go a long way in ensuring your hair remains as healthy as can be (even in hard water).
Does clarifying shampoo help with hard water?
Yes - they do. Many of our picks are clarifying shampoos, as they are deep cleaners and can help remove product build-up and hard water minerals from your hair.
However, clarifying shampoo may not be the best choice for colour-treated or curly hair because regular use can make your precious locks drier. You should also avoid products that contain sulfates if you live in a hard water area, too. Make sure to use nourishing, hydrating conditioners alongside your clarifying shampoos for the perfect balance.
How to use shampoo bar in hard water
If you’re looking for an eco-friendly shampoo, there are plenty of options on the market. From refillable shampoo (!) to travel-friendly shampoo bars, you have the power to go green when it comes to looking after your hair. However, we've all experienced how hard water can affect an ordinary bar of soap. So, it's perfectly fair to be sceptical about shampoo bars. And, though many of us would love to make the switch to bars, hard water seems to stop us in our tracks.
Until now...
Eco beauty brand Friendly Soap has tackled the “hard water issue” with its guide on how to use a shampoo bar in hard water. We’ve taken a snippet from their blog post for your below:
Start by wetting your hair thoroughly. Then, rub the bar between your hands “to create a lather” and apply it to your wet hair. Now, it’s time to massage into your scalp. Friendly Soap recommends using circular motions, rinsing thoroughly and repeating if necessary.
An apple cider vinegar or baking soda rinse may help to soften any residue left over. Friendly Soap recommends apple cider vinegar as the best (and most natural way) to remove hard water buildup from your hair. They add: [the] “acetic acid in the vinegar breaks down the minerals in the water” that make your hair heavy and greasy. Remember to dilute with water beforehand.
