I tried some of the best dry shampoos on the market to see which ones remove oil and clean hair

Say goodbye to limp and greasy locks!

Best dry shampoo (including Batiste, O+M and The Reset)

Whenever your hair feels greasy or lacklustre, dry shampoo can help by absorbing the excess oil, making it look and feel refreshed. Unlike regular shampoo, it offers a quick, convenient solution for freshening up hair without the need for water.

Typically, dry shampoo comes in the form of a spray, powder, or foam and should be applied directly to the roots of the hair. It often contains active ingredients such as starch, clay, or alcohol-based agents, which soak up grease, leaving hair looking refreshed and volumized.

The best dry shampoos at a glance:

It's perfect for those in between hair wash days, after sweaty gym sessions or for those who perhaps have limited mobility and find it uncomfortable to wash their hair as much as they'd like to. As well as absorbing grease, it can add some oomph to limp locks before styling it with hair tools, so it certainly deserves a spot in your beauty collection!

How I tested these dry shampoos

To begin, I looked for the most popular dry shampoos on the market, searching for bestsellers and taking recommendations from our team, as well as my own dry shampoo collection. I then objectively tested them on size and value for money.

To make it a fair test, I waited until the fourth day of post-hair wash before each application so that my hair had a similar level of oiliness as a starting point. I then followed the instructions on the can, applying it how the brand suggested it be applied.

I remarked on the fragrance of each dry shampoo, whether it lasted, how it felt on my locks, and whether it left behind any residue. Then, I looked at my hair to notice any changes—was it limp and oily, did it have more volume?

I also spoke to Advocate Hair Stylist Leon O'Donnell from Josh Wood Colour about the benefits of using dry shampoo, which you can find in the FAQs section under this buying guide.

The best dry shampoos that we've tried and tested ©Arabella Horspool/Yours.co.uk

In the guide, I've included the products from each end of the price scale, including budget-friendly dry shampoos, options that are a little luxurious and everything in-between.

My hair type

My hair is a lot thicker than it looks (as confirmed by my hairdresser!). I have highlights and it has been bleached in the past. It's slightly wavy, and I don't use much heat on it.

I tend to wash my hair twice a week and will use dry shampoo every now and then if my scalp is looking a little greasy but I don't want or don't have time to wash it with shampoo and conditioner.

Every hair type is different, so the effectiveness of these dry shampoos may differ from person to person. You can get specific types, such as shampoo for curly hair and ones specifically created for certain hair colours. If you're unsure which product to go for, I would recommend playing it safe with a dry shampoo for all hair types (which you can find in the list below).

Best overall dry shampoo

Neal + Wolf Dry ShampooNeal & Wolf

My favourite thing about the Neal & Wolf Dry Shampoo is its scent. Even after leaving it in my hair overnight, I could still smell the gorgeous fragrance. It works well as a light hair cleanser and was best used on light grease. I loved that my scalp didn't feel too itchy after using it - in fact, it even felt slightly moisturised!

It is on the higher end of the budget, but a little goes a long way if you're mainly using it to add some freshness to your locks.

Pros

  • Great, long-lasting fragrance
  • Moisturises the scalp

Cons

  • May need reapplication, depending on activities/sweat/weather etc.

Fragrance:Neal & Wolf signature scent

Best luxury dry shampoo

Wow, upon spritzing the Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo I was greeted with a sweet, light, perfume-like fragrance (of warm vanilla, spicy, sweet clover and fresh citrus) that was wonderful. I sprayed it onto my roots, then worked it through with my fingers and found that no residue was left behind (because it's talc-free), which is what you want from a dry shampoo!

My greasy locks went from drab to fab, thanks to natural ingredients such as the nutrient-rich sea buckthorn and rice starch, which absorb dirt and oil. I love that t's lightweight too, so I can go about my day without feeling a heaviness or itchiness on my scalp.

To top it all off, it's suitable for vegans and contains no parabens, phthalates, sulphates, petrolatum gluten, or sodium chloride—amazing.

Pros

  • Formula is vegan and talc-free, so no white residue
  • Natural ingredients including rice starch and sea buckthorn

Cons

  • Pricier than some other brands, but a little goes a long way
Volume:64ml
Fragrance:Warm vanilla, spicy, sweet clover and fresh citrus

FragranceNet.com$6.29View offer

Batiste Dry Shampoo Blush Floral & Flirty smelt great and was simple enough to apply. I started by sectioning the hair and spraying it onto the roots, leaving it for a few minutes to absorb the oil. I then massaged it into my scalp and brushed it out.

It did make my locks look a little less oily, but you could still see some shine, so I would recommend using Batiste on a day when your hair is just on the cusp of going greasy for a light refresh (as it didn't seem to be as absorbent as I would've liked).

All in all, it's a big can, so you do get value for money there. However, it left my scalp feeling itchy throughout the day, and despite brushing it out, I could still feel the product build-up.

Pros

  • Affordable and budget-friendly
  • Fresh, soft fragrance

Cons

  • May create some product build-up
Volume:200ml
Fragrance:Freesia, tuberose and peony

If you need a deep-cleansing dry shampoo, ARKIVE is your go-to. Packaged in a stylish bottle, the ultra-fine formula needs a little shake before use and then a quick spray directly to the roots before brushing it away.

I found it particularly quick and easy to use and was delighted by the results. My hair felt super soft, thanks to the baobab oil which softens the scalp.

Pros

  • Softens using baobab oil to prevent dryness
  • fast and simple application

Cons

  • May add extra oil (baobab), so don't use too much

Best dry shampoo for fine hair

Toni + Guy Sky High Volume Dry ShampooArabella Horspool/Yours.co.uk

Out of all the dry shampoos I've tested, the Toni & Guy Sky High Volume Dry Shampoo added the most volume to my hair whilst wicking away moisture. Unlike other formulas, you have to spray this one from your roots to the tips.

My hair felt lifted and bouncier; however, as I have quite thick hair, I did need to apply a lot of product, which didn't weigh my strands down but did clump them together, so I'd say it's probably more suited to finer and thinner hair (as the bottle suggests), as you won't need to apply as much product.

Pros

  • Hair looked voluminous and more bouncy
  • Wicks away grease

Cons

  • Not ideal for thick hair (as a lot f product may be required)

Fragrance:Yes
Hair type:Fine/thin hair

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo did not leave behind any white residue, and my hair had a lovely light feeling, probably because the shampoo is fine and clump-free.

Made from a silicone-free formula, it cleans and makes hair fabulous. It's let down by the design of the bottle, which does not feel as durable as you'd expect, and other reviewers have commented the same thing.

Pros

  • Silicone-free
  • fine and clump-free formula

I recently tried the Head by TIGI Dry Shampoo, and I’ve got to say, it has a lovely fragrance and makes your hair smell clean as if you've just washed it. It didn't flatten my hair and works a little like hairspray.

I like that it's lightweight. It can leave a visible white cast on your hair, but it's easy to brush out. However, I found that it didn't absorb as much oil as some other brands did.

Pros

  • Vegan, non-sticky formula that's cruelty-free
  • Big bottle at 238 ml

Cons

  • Could me more absorptive

Best dry shampoo with natural ingredients

Nine Yards On The Go Dry ShampooArabella Horspool/Yours.co.uk

Nine Yards On The Go Dry Shampoo contains zesty orange peel essential oil for a deodorising, zesty, natural fragrance. It's also got a volume-boosting powder to ad some fullness to your strands.

Throughout the day, I topped up my hair a couple of times, and the natural starch did not build up or cause any itchiness or discomfort. When washing my hair late on, the product effortlessly left my hair when rinsed with water, which was excellent (although this could be an issue in heavy rain).

Pros

  • Easy to rinse out of hair (before washing it)
  • Orange peel and natural starch for deodorisation

Cons

  • May wash out easily in wet weather

Best dry shampoo for dark hair

O+M Dry Queen Brunette Dry ShampooArabella Horspool/Yours.co.uk
Price: $27.50

Worried about dandruff-looking white residue on your scalp? O&M have the answer! I have blonde and brown hair (or, as some people call it, "bronde"), so I gave the O&M Dry Queen Brunette Dry Shampoo and was pleasantly surprised.

It's suitable for medium-brown to dark-brown hair and comes out brown, blending into the roots with ease. I already have thick hair, but I assume that it will make thinner hair look thicker, as it adds volume and temporary colour. I could say goodbye to stubborn grease it soaked up the oil and gave my tresses a new lease of life.

A family member who dyes their hair tried this Brunette Dry Shampoo on their grey roots and found that it gave them slightly more coverage between hair dye applications.

It is a little on the steep side price-wise, but the results are worth it. If you use it sparingly or on those days that your hair really needs some T.L.C, it should last for a while.

Pros

  • No white residue on brown hair
  • Hair looks and feels clean

Cons

  • Not suitable for lighter hair, as may create dark patches

Best dry shampoo powder

Hair Gain Peptide Puff Dry ShampooArabella Horspool/Yours.co.uk
Price: $13.59 (was £16.99)

www.debenhams.com

A sweet and practical stocking filler, the Hair Gain A Puff of Magic Bauble contains a mini dry shampoo and a scrunchie. It's a nice way for them to try a brand of dry shampoo that might not have used before.

Unlike other options on the list, this Hair Gain Formula comes in a bottle rather than an aerosol tin and you use a built-in puff to dab it onto your hair (rather than spray it). Ingredients include caffeine, biotin and red clover extract to get rid of the grease and revitalise limp hair.

When I tested it, it did require a little bit of force to get the product out of the bottle, but once applied, it did the job well and soaked up the oil that built up after a few days of not washing my hair. It may be a small bottle, but it's a great tester size, which is brilliant for travelling.

Pros

  • Packaged in a bauble and comes with a limited edition, vegan scrunchie
  • Compact size, making it travel-friendly

Cons

  • Requires some force to get the shampoo out of the bottle
Volume:5ml
Scent:Yes
Hair type:All hair types

FAQS

Is dry shampoo bad for your hair?

"No," says Advocate Stylist Leon O'Donnell. Using it "means you don't need to wash it as often, it gives you body and volume, and it can carry on your style for longer.", which can be beneficial , especially for dry and damaged hair.

How to use dry shampoo

Obviously, instructions vary from product to product, but the general consensus is: "Don't spray too closely to your head; otherwise, it can go clumpy on the hair. Make sure to shake the can before applying. Make sure to do it in sections to evenly distribute."

Does dry shampoo cause hair loss?

Does dry shampoo wash out with water?

"Yes. Just make sure to use a good shampoo and conditioner like Josh Wood Colour Miracle Shampoo and Conditioner."

Is there a better alternative to dry shampoo?

"The only alternative would be to wash your hair but you don't want to do that too frequently. Talcom powder used to be used before dry shampoo was invented."
