If you're a fan of long nails then you'll be pleased to hear coffin nails, also known as ballerina nails, are back! These wider tapered nails – resembling a ballerina slipper, or coffin, hence the name – are a statement way to show off intricate nail designs or a bold colour choice, great for summer holiday nails.

They're less pointy than stiletto nails, and can be achieved with a gel manicure or with acrylics. However, gels will be more prone to breaking, so for this longer shape acrylics are going to be more practical. You're also not likely to achieve this look with a manicure at home, unless you're very lucky to have strong nails that can pull off the coffin shape naturally.

Here are 10 coffin nail designs to inspire you to try this statement look...

1- Keep it simple

Long nails don't have to be loud – this gorgeous muted purple sets off the shape of these nails perfectly, while remaining understated and professional.

2 - Faux stiletto nails

If you like the stiletto nail look but don't want the sharp edges, a faux stiletto nail can be achieved with coffin nails. We love the sparkle finish on the tips.

3 - Bright and beautiful

Bright colours such as oranges, yellows and pinks are perfect for a summer holiday look, but also look great in the winter so you can bring a piece of sunshine with you wherever you go. A mix and match finish adds a bit of extra interest.

4 - French manicure

Another more subtle way to wear coffin nails or ballerina nails is to opt for an understated French manicure - the length will still give it that wow factor.

5 - Abstract coffin nails

Like miniature pieces of artwork on each of your fingers, abstract nails look fantastic. Choose your favourite colours to easily match with your wardrobe, or if they're for a special occasion you can coordinate with the colour of your outfit.

6 - Leopard print

If you're an animal print fan, you'll love these leopard print nails. You can either opt for the tips like above, or go for print on the whole nail. Zebra or tiger print would look fantastic too!

7 - Classic red

You can't go far wrong with a red lip, and the same can be said for red nails. The glossy finish of these nails catches the light beautifully, especially with the glittery ring finger.

8 - Nude nails with a twist

This design takes nude nails to a whole other level. We love the combination of skin tones, which also pair beautifully with the rings. Take note, matching your jewellery with your nails works!

9 - Dark nails

Adding a bit of glitz to your nails is a great way to make a statement. Mixing the intricate dreamcatcher design with glitter nails and also a matt finish has worked here beautifully by sticking to grey tones.

10 - Pretty in pink

This simple pink and white design looks effortlessly chic - or you could opt for brighter shades for a pop of colour.
