Finding the best shampoo for greasy hair can be challenging, as what works for one person may not work for another. However, you'll notice the difference when you find the right formula to tackle excess build-up. It’s not just the scalp’s oil (or sebum) production that can cause greasy hair. Factors such as pollution, hard water and product build-up can also weigh hair down and make it look dull. Even dry hair can become oily at the roots. While shampoos for dry and damaged hair provide hydration, they may lack the clarifying ingredients that shampoos for oily hair contain. That's why knowing your hair type and finding the right shampoo is important.
There may be times in life when you inexplicably find yourself with greasy hair. Excess oil production can occur for several reasons. It could be hormonal changes – in which case a shampoo for menopausal hair may be ideal. Equally, it could be a simple as sweaty hair after exercise. Knowing what the triggers are can help you tailor your haircare routine to reduce oily build-up. Just bear in mind, we all need some oil in our hair, so it's important not to over-wash hair or use products that are too harsh for one's hair type.
Best shampoos for greasy hair at a glance
From how often you should wash your hair to which products to use, there are simple ways to cleanse hair more effectively. Head Stylist and educator, Laura Elliott shares her top tips for managing greasy hair: “A simple step that could be overlooked in many haircare routines is double shampooing, which ensures you’re achieving a deep cleanse each time you wash your hair and will help to keep grease at bay."
Laura adds, avoid applying conditioner to the scalp because "it can lead to a build-up of excess oils making hair greasier and can block scalp pores which can result in itchiness and dandruff." Finally, an intriguing hair hack is to wash your hair upside down: "An often-forgotten section of hair is at the nape of the neck, as most focus on the scalp and lengths when cleansing but missing this area can lead to a build-up of oils and product residue. Washing hair upside down also means that shampoo and conditioner runs straight off the hair and down the drain and doesn’t clog pores on your face and back.”

Paul Mitchell Clarifying Shampoo Two, 300ml
TESTED
Living in a city is a double-edged sword regarding hair care. On the one hand, I want to wash my hair less often to preserve its natural oils, but pollution, gym sweat and daily grime leave me feeling like I need to shampoo every day. This is where Paul Mitchell Clarifying Shampoo Two has become one of my favourite haircare products. Paul Mitchell educator Victoria Panting says: "Hair texture also plays a role—fine hair tends to show oil more quickly, while coarse or curly hair absorbs oil more evenly." This totally sums up the issue I have with my hair.
The scent of Shampoo Two instantly takes me back to childhood trips to the hairdressers—fresh, lemony and unmistakably professional. Even before I opened the bottle, its sleek design and minimalist branding caught my eye. It feels like a product that knows exactly what it’s doing.
The formula is fantastic at tackling oily hair, providing a deep clean that removes all the build-up from products and city living. Unlike some clarifying shampoos that can leave hair feeling stripped and dry, Shampoo Two strikes the perfect balance. Thanks to ingredients like chamomile, henna, rosemary, aloe vera, and jojoba, it doesn’t just cleanse—it also adds body, fullness and shine.
Another major plus for me? It’s colour-safe, which is a must for my colour-treated hair. I paired it with Paul Mitchell's Color Protect Leave-In Treatment and Paul Mitchell Clean Beauty Everyday Leave-In Treatment; the results are fantastic. My hair feels refreshed, super clean and soft to the touch—a combination I rarely find with clarifying shampoos. Just to say the photographs are of my unstyled hair, pre-conditioning, as I wanted to show how glossy and full of body my hair looks with shampooing alone.
Using it is simple: massage into wet hair, rinse and repeat if needed. As the name suggests, you could shampoo twice for an extra deep clean. Otherwise, a little goes a long way, which makes the bottle last. It's perfect for a revitalising morning shower, leaving my hair and my mood feeling fresh and energised. Just be aware, this shampoo does contain sulphates, which I'm mentioning because some people need to use sulphate-free products.
Finally, Paul Mitchell's reputation as a haircare icon speaks volumes. It’s no wonder this shampoo has thousands of glowing reviews online and is an Amazon’s Choice product. It’s an essential part of my haircare routine—a must-have for anyone dealing with oily hair, product build-up, or just craving that salon-fresh feel at home.

This is undeniably a luxury solution for oily scalps and dry, damaged ends. Leonor Greyl’s Bain TS Shampooing is a balancing shampoo par excellence. This luxury Parisian brand has earned a reputation for delivering luxurious haircare with natural, effective ingredients. Specially formulated for oily scalps and dry ends, this vegan shampoo is crafted with 95% natural ingredients to purify and cleanse without weighing hair down or leaving a greasy residue.
The shampoo’s formula blends calming lime tree oil, yeast's anti-sebum properties, and sage's antiperspirant benefits to help purify and cleanse oily scalps. Vitamins and plant proteins condition the lengths and ends, leaving hair soft and shiny.
On first impressions, I thought the shampoo had a runny consistency so take care when you dispense it. Bain TS smells beautifully of fresh oranges. It forms a cleansing lather that rinses out easily, leaving my hair feeling thoroughly cleansed but not stripped.
I was impressed by the results after just one wash. I could run my fingers through my hair, and it felt extra soft and not a bit grotty! My hair felt stronger, smoother and less frizzy than usual. When I let it air dry, it looked and felt thicker. Even my frizzy flyaways were tamed, and my hair felt so manageable. In general, I found that I needed to use less additional products and styling because my hair was tamed by the shampoo.
While Bain TS delivers noticeable softness and shine, the high price and understated packaging may give some pause. It’s undeniably pricey, and the packaging doesn’t feel as premium as I’d expect for a luxury brand. But the results speak for themselves—this shampoo is a top choice if you can afford it.
After three weeks of use, my hair is much more manageable and healthier with no greasy build-up on the scalp. Just to say, I wash my hair everyday and I'm running out of shampoo! Combined with a high-quality conditioner, Bain TS makes a noticeable difference. It may not be an everyday indulgence, but it’s worth it for salon-quality results at home.
Launched in 1972, Bain TS was revolutionary, eschewing harsh, stripping ingredients for plant-based solutions to rebalance sebum production. Decades later, it remains a standout option for anyone investing in healthy, beautiful hair.
Leonor Greyl products are silicone-free, SLS/SLES-free, paraben-free, cruelty-free, and ocean-friendly.

Natalie's Mum, Angela, reviews Philip Kingsley’s Flaky/Itchy Shampoo. Angela has been using this shampoo for years and considers it truly superb. She has always been a fan of Philip Kingsley products, particularly because she has thick hair that requires daily washing. After struggling with flaking and irritation caused by bleaching, she discovered this shampoo, which has been her go-to ever since. The shampoo calms her scalp, reduces itchiness and prevents flare-ups. She hasn’t experienced any major issues since she started using it.
Angela shampoos twice and leaves it in for about five minutes before rinsing. While it doesn’t create much lather on the first shampoo, it does on the second; she finds the results well worth it. She enjoys the light apple scent, which adds a pleasant touch. Mild enough for daily use, this shampoo still deeply cleanses without stripping her hair of colour or causing dryness. Her scalp feels balanced and her hair is healthy.
Although the shampoo contains sulphates and fragrance, Angela has found it works perfectly for her needs and does not aggravate her sensitive skin. In addition to this, Angela is a big fan of Philip Kingsley’s Moisture Balancing Shampoo and Elasticizer deep conditioning hair mask for keeping her hair in top condition.
This is a superb shampoo for calming oily scalp, dandruff and flaking, Angela can’t recommend this enough. Just to add, if you have strong skin sensitivity or reasons why you can't use shampoo containing fragrances or sulphates, try Philip Kingsley No Scent No Colour Shampoo. It is a gentle shampoo that is suitable for individuals undergoing and post cancer treatment.
Philip Kingsley’s range of shampoos and haircare products are specially formulated for a range of hair types, plus it's important to know that shampooing one's hair is essential for maintaining a healthy scalp. Top Trichologist Anabel Kingsley, Brand President at Philip Kingsley, says: "Our scalp is an extension of the skin on our forehead, and, just like the skin on our face, has a skin barrier which helps to protect and keep it healthy. If your scalp is not clean and healthy, it simply will not produce hairs of beautiful, strong quality”.

KIND2’s The Rebalancing One is a solid, soap-free shampoo bar expertly designed to clarify oily or thick hair while remaining gentle on the scalp. Infused with rosemary, caffeine, calendula, and yucca extract, it promotes scalp health and balance. For added shine and nourishment, it includes coconut, macadamia and cacao seed butter, while upcycled charcoal enhances its cleansing properties. The fresh herbal scent comes from natural fragrances, making the shampooing experience as pleasant as it is effective.
What sets this multi-award-winning shampoo bar apart is its eco-conscious design. It’s palm oil-free, plastic-free, vegan, and packaged in a compostable, recyclable box. The bar lasts approximately 80 washes, equivalent to 500ml of liquid shampoo, making it a cost-effective and sustainable alternative. Its compact, solid form is also perfect for travel and flights.
When I first unwrapped the bar, I was greeted by a refreshing herbal fragrance of rosemary and mint. The bar is larger than other shampoo bars I’ve tried and has a minimalistic design with no unnecessary branding. It will last a long time, making it good value for money. As with all shampoo bars you need to store them in a dry place otherwise they soften and become unusable. However, this bar was certainly more solid than others I've tried. I felt it was similar to Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo Bar albeit with less branding.
Using the bar is simple: wet your hair, wet the bar and apply it directly to your hair to create a rich, satisfying lather. This bar produces more foam than other KIND2 bars, making it ideal for oily or thicker hair types. Shampooing is stimulating experience and my hair feels squeaky clean. After drying, my hair felt incredibly light, clean and fresh without any residue.
The Rebalancing One is especially effective at maintaining a balanced, healthy scalp while delivering softness and shine to the lengths and ends. After each use, my hair felt manageable and smooth, and my scalp felt invigorated.
Pros
- Long-lasting (approximately 80 washes) and cost-effective

- Refreshing herbal fragrance of rosemary and mint enhances the experience

Best shampoo for greasy hair with an outstanding fragrance

The award-winning Neal & Wolf Daily Shampoo is expertly crafted to cleanse hair, leaving it feeling fresh, lustrous and ready for styling. Made with natural ingredients, the premium formula fortifies your hair rather than stripping it, ensuring luxurious and easy-to-manage hair.
Enriched with wheat protein to boost moisture and reduce flyaways, plus shea butter for a brilliant shine, Neal & Wolf delivers a superior experience for those with greasy roots and beyond.
In particular, it's fragrance stands out. It has top notes of white thyme and mandarin, middle notes of lily and ylang ylang, and warm base notes of vanilla and orange blossom. Our tester, Katy, said, "The shampoo has a gorgeous scent. It smells like a combination of warm spices and floral vanilla—and the scent lingered on my hair throughout the day."
Having used the shampoo for three weeks, Katy thought it was particularly effective for her normal-to-thick hair, which tends to be oily on top and dry on the ends due to heat styling. She typically washes her hair three to four times a week. Katy found the shampoo to cleanse thoroughly without leaving any residue build-up; a common issue with other shampoos she has used in the past.
"The shampoo felt silky in my hands and left my hair shiny and manageable," she shared. "I was impressed by how fresh and clean my hair felt after use." However, she noted that achieving a good lather required a slightly larger amount of product.
While the shampoo performed beautifully on its own, our tester said she would love to see how her hair felt when paired with the Neal & Wolf Daily Conditioner, especially to address her dry, heat-damaged split ends. Overall, Katy was delighted with the results and plans to continue using the product as part of her hair care routine.
Available in a convenient 250ml size, Neal & Wolf Daily Shampoo is a must-try for anyone seeking a balance of effective cleansing and indulgent luxury.
This product is free from sulphates, parabens, DEA, and TEA, cruelty-free, and suitable for vegans.

I’ve been using the Fudge Professional Clean Mint Deep Cleansing Shampoo for a couple of weeks, and it’s changed my hair routine. I strongly dislike not washing my hair for more than two days, and I struggle with pollution and greasy build-up. However, I know it’s not ideal to wash my hair daily. This shampoo has been the perfect solution—it keeps my hair feeling fresher for longer, allowing me to comfortably space out washes to every other day.
The shampoo itself is a thick, pale green liquid. When lathered, it has a refreshing, minty smell that’s both invigorating and scalp-tingling. While it's not an overly strong fragrance, I really like how it has different notes to it, not just menthol. It's a great way to start the day, or to scrub the grime of the city away in the evening and leave my hair thoroughly cleansed.
Another bonus is the menthol fragrance. My partner – who prefers a simple haircare routine – loves the cooling, refreshing sensation of this shampoo. It’s gentle yet deeply cleansing, making it perfect for both of us, especially since we both have fine hair. Plus, it’s sulphate-free, which means no harsh cleaning agents, so it’s kind to our hair and scalp. The only drawback is that since he's taken to using it, the shampoo ran out faster!
One of the biggest draws for me was its colour-locking feature. I have dyed hair, and some shampoos tend to make my colour go brassy too quickly. With this one, I’ve noticed my colour stays vibrant for longer, saving me a few extra weeks before heading back to the hairdressers.
The shampoo boasts some innovative technology, like SCALPFRESH and Opti-Plex, which not only deeply cleanse and balance oil production but also strengthen hair and protect it from damage. After just one week, I could see a noticeable difference in the health of my scalp and how clean and refreshed my hair felt. Shampooing twice does the trick for an extra deep clean, leaving my hair squeaky clean and my scalp revitalised.
This shampoo has quickly become a staple in my and my partner's haircare routine, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a gentle yet effective deep cleansing shampoo that’s perfect for dyed fine hair.
Jonathan Andrew, Fudge Professional Global Ambassador says: "Overactive sebaceous glands can make your scalp greasy, leaving your hair flat and lifeless. Skipping washes, using too many products, or even hormonal changes can make your hair look limp and oily. Fudge Professional Clean Mint Shampoo is a great option. This sulphate-free invigorating shampoo is specifically designed to deeply cleanse the scalp, leaving it feeling refreshed and balanced. It contains ingredients that help to control excess oil production while delivering a cooling sensation due to the mint, which can help soothe irritation. It's ideal for those dealing with both oily hair and scalp – it’s a scalp detox with the added benefit of cooling and refreshing mint."
Pros
- Keeps hair feeling fresher for longer, reducing the need for daily washing
- Colour-locking feature helps dyed hair stay vibrant longer
- Refreshing, yet not overly strong, minty scent with invigorating and scalp-tingling properties
- Gentle yet deeply cleansing, suitable for fine hair
- Sulphate-free, avoiding harsh cleaning agents
- SCALPFRESH and Opti-Plex technology strengthens and protects hair
Cons
- If you're shampooing twice, you'll soon get through the 250ml tube

Odylique Tea Tree Herb Shampoo
TESTED
As someone who has suffered from dermatitis in the past and occasionally deals with allergic flare-ups that make my skin itchy, I’ve learned to be very cautious about the beauty and cleaning products I use. When I’m away from home, it’s not always possible to avoid irritation caused by things like hotel shampoos or detergents, but discovering a range of hair care products that are organic, gentle, and easy to travel with has been such a relief.
Odylique’s shampoo has transformed my routine. Thanks to the conditioning herbs in this Tea Tree Herb Shampoo, I no longer need to pack a separate conditioner. That makes my travel bag lighter and my routine simpler.
Living in the city, I often feel the build-up of oil and pollution on my scalp after a day out. This, combined with my changing hormones, means I prefer to wash my hair daily. Odylique’s purifying formula, with tea tree oil, deeply cleanses and balances my scalp without causing irritation.
I’ll admit, the texture of the shampoo is a little different from typical commercial shampoos—it doesn’t lather much. But I’ve learned not to use more than a 50p-sized amount (perfect for my shoulder-length hair). Instead, I take my time massaging it into my scalp in sections, which turns into a lovely, almost meditative ritual. The herbal fragrance is authentic, with noticeable notes of rosemary and tea tree oil. It’s soothing and refreshing, though I know not everyone is a fan of herbal aromas.
When my hair dries, it feels incredibly light, soft and thoroughly clean—without any hint of residue. My partner even commented on how nice it smelled and how great my hair looked, which was nice!
Odylique’s commitment to being 100% natural, organic and vegan makes their products stand out. Thank goodness there is a natural alternative to medicated shampoos. It’s especially great for those with oily or problematic scalps prone to itchiness, like mine.
Margaret, the founder, recommends leaving the shampoo in for 2-3 minutes to let the organic tea tree and conditioning herbs absorb before rinsing thoroughly, which I found helps.
I’ve read mixed customer reviews about the herbal aroma, texture and effectiveness. But hair types and preferences vary, so it’s worth trying to see if it works for you. It can help alleviate greasy hair, dandruff and a sensitive scalp. This shampoo has been an amazing find for me—especially as someone who knows how miserable allergies and their symptoms can be. The shampoo leaves my hair feeling clean, my scalp balanced and my skin happy.
Pros
- Organic, natural and vegan formulation
- Gentle on sensitive or allergy-prone skin
- It contains conditioning herbs so some hair types will not need an additional conditioner
- Effectively cleanses and balances the scalp, soothing skin irritation, cleansing dandruff and excess oil
- Authentic herbal fragrance with rosemary and tea tree notes
- Hair feels light, soft, and free from residue after drying
Cons
- Different texture from commercial shampoos; minimal lather
- Herbal aroma may not appeal to everyone

At £42, ALLSKIN|MED’s Exfoliating and Purifying Shampoo is the most expensive shampoo I’ve tested, but its performance makes it a strong contender for premium scalp care. This orange-coloured shampoo contains active ingredients that are designed to cleanse and exfoliate the scalp while maintaining moisture in hair.
You may have heard of the ingredient salycilic acid, which works directly on the scalp and hair follicles to remove dry flakes, prevent their return and regulate excess oil. The anti-dandruff benefits are immediate, relieving itching and irritation while promoting a healthy scalp biome.
I found it was best to shake the bottle well to get the ingredients to mix, massage it into wet hair and leave for 2–3 minutes before rinsing. It's quite a runny formula, so take care when you first dispense it. The shampoo produces a light lather and leaves hair feeling deeply cleansed.
After drying, my hair had noticeably more bounce and volume, feeling refreshed and free of residue. The added hydration also made my hair look soft and healthy, a bonus for anyone seeking both effective cleansing and nourishment. Compared to other clarifying shampoos I've used, this did not make my hair feel dry, in fact my hair looked considerably healthier.
The shampoo is suitable for frequent use and works well on all hair types, including colour-treated hair. While the price tag may be steep, the results—cleaner, fresher, and more manageable hair—make it worth considering for those with flaky or oily scalps in need of a revitalising solution.
Pros
- Cleanses and exfoliates the scalp, removing dry flakes and regulating excess oil
- Anti-dandruff, reducing itching and irritation
- Leaves hair feeling soft, healthy and moisturised without dryness
- Hair appears refreshed, with added volume and no build-up
- Dermatologically tested

- High price point
- Take care when dispensing as it's quite runny

Lavera Freshness and Balance Shampoo is made with organic mint and organic lime, and I love that it uses plant-based ingredients—no silicones, just ingredients straight from nature. It's a well-established German brand, but this may be the first time you've heard about it.
From the first use, I noticed that it felt different to a usual shampoo. The semi-opaque, slightly runny consistency lathered beautifully, and the fresh fragrance is subtle yet invigorating—not overpowering, just authentically clean. The mint gives a cooling sensation on the scalp, which feels amazing, especially when my scalp and hair feels weighed down by build-up. The lime adds a refreshing, purifying touch that leaves my hair feeling light and thoroughly cleansed.
After washing, my hair feels soft, perfectly manageable and pampered. Best of all, it stays fresh longer, and my scalp feels balanced rather than stripped. If you’re looking for a natural solution to oily hair, this shampoo is worth it.
Pros
- Made with organic mint and lime for a natural, plant-based formula
- Helps control oiliness and balances the scalp
- Provides a refreshing, cooling sensation on the scalp
- Subtle, yet invigorating fragrance that smells authentically clean
- Leaves hair soft, manageable and feeling light
- No silicones or harsh ingredients
Cons
- Slightly runny consistency, which might not appeal to everyone
- Not widely known in the UK

OSMO Scalp Therapy Detoxifying Shampoo
TESTED
I tried this OSMO Scalp Therapy Detoxifying Shampoo, and it’s great for thoroughly removing product build-up and impurities while still preserving my hair’s natural oils. It’s formulated with rosemary and tea tree extract, which promote a healthy scalp. After using it, my hair feels refreshed and perfectly prepped for styling.
This shampoo really delivers on its promise to cleanse. It also stimulates the scalp, leaving it feeling tingly and fresh. Do note, though, that it contains sulphates, so it provides an intensive clean. If you have oily hair, use a lot of styling products, or live in a polluted city, this is a fantastic option for getting that deeply clean feeling. However, if your hair is on the dry or sensitive side, a sulphate-free alternative might be a better fit. It’s always smart to check the ingredients if you have any sensitivities.
The shampoo is clear and creates a rich, foamy lather, so you don’t need to use much. It smells lovely; at first, I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but it's actually the tea tree oil I was picking up on. It leaves my scalp feeling tingly fresh; overall a refreshing shampoo experience. After washing, my scalp felt invigorated, and my hair was cleansed and light. I think, pairing it with a good conditioner is key to keeping hair from feeling too dry.
When I dried my hair, it felt soft, clean and easy to brush through, which is a big win for me. I’m trying to grow my hair long, so finding products that make it more manageable is a huge help. I also noticed that if you deal with mineral build-up from hard water, this shampoo does a great job of clearing out impurities and leaving your hair looking brighter.
Interestingly, I came across a tip in a customer review where someone used this shampoo for their first wash to cleanse, then followed up with a hydrating shampoo for added moisture. While my fine hair doesn’t need double shampooing, I think this method could work well for thicker hair types. Personally, I’ll stick to using it with a rich conditioner.
Overall, it’s a good-sized bottle and excellent value for money. After each use, my hair feels soft, light and completely refreshed. Definitely worth a try!
Pros
- Effective in removing build-up and impurities from scalp and hair
- Contains rosemary and tea tree extract which smells lovely
- Produces a rich lather, so a little goes a long way
- Invigorates the scalp with a tingly fresh sensation
- Leaves hair feeling refreshed, light and soft
- Good-sized bottle and excellent value for money
Cons
- Contains sulphates, which may be too harsh for dry or sensitive hair
- Requires pairing with a conditioner to avoid potential dryness

Goldwell Dualsenses Scalp Specialist Densifying Shampoo, 250ml
TESTED
If you struggle with an oily scalp or build-up caused by pollution, Goldwell Dualsenses Deep Cleansing Shampoo is a great choice. This vegan, dermatologically approved formula is designed to purify hair and scalp, effectively removing residues, sebum and environmental pollutants like carbon particles. Thanks to its gentle yet thorough cleansing properties, it's perfect for daily use.
The clear shampoo is infused with powerful ingredients, such as caffeine to revitalise the scalp, panthenol to moisturise and red raspberry seed oil for its antioxidant benefits. White tea and sage extracts further enhance the formula with purifying, antimicrobial and soothing properties. Dualsenses’ signature MicroProtec Complex ensures these benefits are distributed evenly, claiming to deliver instant results. Dualsenses is used by more that 70,000 stylists worldwide, so it's a real treat to have a salon-quality shampoo at home.
As someone who lives in a city and deals with pollution build-up by washing my hair daily, I was impressed by how clean and refreshed my hair felt after use. The shampoo doesn’t create much lather, but its lightweight formula does the job without stripping the scalp. It has a subtle fruity fragrance that’s pleasant without being overpowering.
After drying, my hair felt silky soft, and the gentle formulation preserved my colour-treated hair without stripping. However, given my hair type—prone to frizz and dryness at the ends—I needed an extra conditioner alongside this deep-cleansing shampoo. To further manage my dry, slightly knotty ends, I also applied a serum for added smoothness. That said, as many online reviews suggest, this is an exceptional cleansing shampoo, and those with less dry or frizz-prone hair will not require as much additional conditioning as I did.
Overall, this shampoo is ideal for anyone seeking a deep cleanse that balances an oily scalp.
Pros
- Effectively removes build-up, sebum and pollutants from hair and scalp
- Gentle enough for daily use
- Vegan, dermatologically approved and suitable for colour-treated hair
- Infused with beneficial ingredients like caffeine, panthenol and red raspberry seed oil for scalp and hair health
- Lightweight formula leaves hair feeling clean and refreshed
Cons
- May require additional conditioning for hair types prone to frizz or dryness at the ends

As someone going through peri-menopause, I’ve become more mindful of the products I use in my hair and beauty routine. Hormonal changes have made my skin and scalp more sensitive, so I’ve been looking for natural, gentle products that still deliver great results. Before resorting to medicated shampoos (which – let's face it – smell like medicine), I wanted to try some organic products that would gently cleanse greasy hair and soothe an itchy scalp. That’s how I came across Urtekram Organic Rasul Shampoo—and I’ve been very pleased with it. Although you might not be familiar with the brand, Urtekram haircare products are available online from organic and health retailers, but also Superdrug and Amazon.
Rasul is named after an Arabian spa treatment that uses mud and steam. The shampoo has a pale brown colour and fresh, minty aroma. Shake before use to mix all the natural ingredients. It smells wonderfully natural, like stepping into an herb garden—a refreshing change from heavily perfumed shampoos that I can't bear. The moment I lathered it, I felt a subtle tingling sensation from the mint—a clear sign it was invigorating and cleansing my scalp without being harsh.
One of the key ingredients, ghassoul clay, did a good job of tackling the oiliness at my roots, drawing out impurities while leaving my hair feeling soft and hydrated. Combined with soothing aloe vera and moisturising glycerine, my hair felt thoroughly clean but never stripped or dry. Knowing this is an organic and vegan shampoo gives me confidence that I’m choosing something healthier for my hair and scalp.
After washing, I paired the shampoo with my regular Aveda Sap Moss Conditioner, and the results were fantastic. My naturally curly hair dried into luscious, defined curls that looked glossy, smooth and healthier. There was no frizz, no product build-up and my scalp felt calm.
This shampoo doesn’t create a lot of foam—typical of natural formulas—but it’s still very effective. I also appreciate that the bottle is 75% plant-based and the product is COSMOS organic certified, which is important to me as I try to go for more sustainable products. That said, I acknowledge that for more severe scalp issues, a medicated shampoo may be necessary.
For anyone navigating hormonal changes or dealing with sensitivities, I would recommend Urtekram Organic Rasul Shampoo. It’s gentle and effective and left my hair and scalp feeling light, clean and revitalised. Using it may make a small difference to my wellbeing, but I truly believe that these small positive steps collectively add up.
Pros
- Gentle yet cleansing on a sensitive scalp
- Made with natural and organic ingredients
- Effectively cleanses greasy roots while hydrating and soothing the scalp
- Fresh, minty aroma with a natural, herb-garden scent
- Vegan, COSMOS organic certified and packaged in a 75% plant-based bottle
Cons
- For more severe scalp conditions, this may not have the cleansing and balancing effectiveness that a medicated shampoo offers

We asked Anabel Kingsley, Senior Consultant Trichologist and Brand President at Philip Kingsley frequently asked questions about what to look for in shampoos for oily or greasy hair.
Best shampoo for greasy hair FAQs (answered by Anabel Kingsley)
What ingredients should I look for for oily or greasy hair shampoo?
"Look for a shampoo with a gentle cleansing agent, such as SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulphate). People are typically afraid of SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) in products because it can be irritating, so if you have a sensitive scalp then use a sulphate-free shampoo such as our No Scent No Colour Shampoo. More than anything make sure you shampoo frequently and properly to cleanse your scalp."
Are there specific shampoos that balance scalp oil without drying the hair?
"Choose a shampoo that suits your hair texture, providing the right levels of cleansing and moisturising ingredients. For those with fine hair that gets oily fast, I love our Body Building Shampoo. It cleanses to give the most amazing weightless volume. My favourite, however, is our Flaky/Itchy Scalp Shampoo; it is effective at exfoliating away any flakes as well as getting through grease. It is gentle enough to use daily with exceptional ingredients, including anti-microbial Piroctone Olamine and Lauryl Betaine, to deeply cleanse without causing redness or irritation."
How often should I wash my hair to manage greasiness?
Try to leave no more than two days between shampoos. You should spend approximately one minute gently but firmly massaging your scalp when you shampoo and pay attention to all areas – people often forget to massage the back of their scalp. Rinse well to ensure shampoo residue, and the dirt/oil/dead skin cells trapped in it are washed away.
Do hair textures (straight, curly, coarse, fine) affect how greasy the hair gets?
Yes, your hair texture can impact how oily your scalp is. Those with finer textured hair, tend to have a more hairs per cm on their head that those with thicker, coarser or coiled hair textures and therefore more oil glands producing more sebum. This is the reason those with fine hair often feel their hair gets greasy quickly, and they feel the need to wash it daily to avoid the appearance of flat, limp roots.
Is there a risk of over-stripping natural oils leading to more grease production?
You cannot ‘strip’ your hair or scalp or natural oils. Firstly, oil is produced on the scalp (not the hair), and once your scalp is cleansed, it will simply continue producing oil at the same rate. Using products suitable for your hair’s texture should not have an adverse effect. If they dry your hair out, it is because the product formulation is not giving your hair what it needs, not because you are over-washing your hair – simply choose products that work for you.
How can I identify if a shampoo is too harsh for my scalp?
If you are experiencing irritation, dry and flaky skin or redness, it could be a sign that your shampoo isn’t right for your skin type. Try using a shampoo with no scent such as our No Scent No Colour Shampoo which is formulated for the most sensitive scalps.
What's your favourite shampoo?
My favourite shampoo is our Flaky/Itchy Shampoo, it is an effective but gentle daily shampoo with exceptional ingredients including anti-microbial Piroctone Olamine and Lauryl Betaine to deeply cleanse without causing redness or irritation.
