Purple shampoo might sound a little strange at first, but it's the secret weapon for blondes, silvers, grey hair and anyone who’s working with lightened hair. This magical formula is packed with purple pigments that leave you with a fresh, cool look and vibrant colour.

It works by using purple pigments to neutralise warm, yellow, and brassy tones. You see, purple is opposite to yellow on the colour wheel, so it cancels out those yellow or orange hues you get from hard water, UV rays ora bad hair bleach job and cools down the overall tone of your hair.

The best purple shampoo at a glance:

But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the best one? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with this fun and easy guide to picking the perfect purple shampoo for you! How we tested the best purple shampoos

We tested a selection of the best purple shampoos on bleached and highlighted hair, following the instructions on each bottle. We were checking to see if they removed brassy tones, left our hair smelling nice and did not dry out our locks.

In choosing purple shampoos, we have covered all bases, from shampoos for dry, damaged hair to affordable options and choices for both dyed and natural hair.

Best overall purple shampoo

Neal + Wolf Blonde Purple Brightening ShampooArabella Horspool/Yours.co.uk

Wow, what can I say about the Neal & Wolf Blonde Purple Brightening Shampoo? My hair felt lovely and soft (which you don't get from all purple shampoos). There was no product build-up either, so my scalp was super clean and light, which is probably due to the lack of additives and sulphates.

As for the colour, it left my highlights looking and feeling refreshed. The consistency felt a little rougher than other products, but this did not seem have any adverse effects, so to I can't fault it! To ensure my hair was super smooth after washing, I dried my hair with the Neal & Wolf Miracle Rapid Blow-Dry Mist.

Pros

  • Leaves hair feeling soft
  • No product build-up

Cons

  • Consistency is a bit gritty
Suitable for:Blonde and lightened hair

Best purple shampoo for damaged hair

Philip Kingsley Pure Blonde/Silver Purple Brightening ShampooArabella Horspool / Yours.co.uk

Rrp: $24.00

Price: $22.40

On days that my hair feels particularly dry or damaged, I will use the Fudge Professional Clean Blonde Damage Rewind Shampoo. This is a super strong formula packed full of violet tones, so my highlights looked visibly lighter and icier after just a few uses.

It's important to note that most of my hair is quite a dark blonde/brown colour, so I left it on for 5 minutes as per the directions on the back of the bottle and found this to be more than enough. However, if you already have a head of super-light hair, you may need to shorten this time if you want to avoid a purple rinse.

My hair did feel stronger, although it can dry it out if it's left on there for too long. It was quite a thick formula compared to others I have tried. My hands were slightly stained after use, but this went away after washing my hands with soap and water; I recommend wearing gloves if you've recently had your nails done!

Pros

  • Helps to minimise signs of damage
  • Violet pigments help to remove brasiness and lighten hair

Cons

  • May stain skin, especially hands or nails
Suitable for:Damaged blonde/bleached hair

Best stain-free purple shampoo

Philip Kingsley Pure Blonde/Silver Purple Brightening ShampooArabella Horspool / Yours.co.uk
Price: $35.00

After lathering up the Philip Kingsley Pure Blonde/Silver Purple Brightening Shampoo in my hands, I was surprised to see that its intense purple shade had turned colourless; assuming this may affect the end result, I massaged it throughout my hair and scalp.

The first positive to note is that as the water didn't turn purple, the product left no splashes on the tiles that would have to be wiped away. It was quick and easy to rinse the formula out of my hair (as it was mostly bubbles).

To my surprise, my blonde strands were brighter and felt revitalised even after one wash, which is no mean feat in the winter as they don't see as much sunlight, so tend stay darker.

Pros

  • Brightens hair
  • Non-staining formula

Cons

  • For best results it should be left on for longer
Suitable for:Colour treated hair

Bleach London Bond Restoring Purple Shampoo

best purple shampoo for highlights

Bleach London Bond Restoring Purple ShampooArabella Horspool/Yours.co.uk

The Bleach London Bond Restoring Purple Shampoo has a wonderfully vibrant purple hue. It's a vegan formula that lifted the yellow tone from my hair without over-drying it, leaving it feeling super clean.

Some purple shampoos can have a chemical smell to them, so I liked that the scent of this Bleach London product is not too overpowering.

My hair is quite thick, so it did take multiple uses to show visible results, but that's to be expected. I mostly noticed a difference on my highlights, which are quite a few shades lighter than my darker base colour.

  • Not a pungent scent

Best budget purple shampoo

PROVOKE Touch Of Silver Brightening Purple ShampooPROVOKE

After just one use, the PROVOKE Touch Of Silver Brightening Purple Shampoo made my hair appear visibly lighter. You do have to keep it on your locks for 10 minutes before rinsing it away, which was significantly longer than some of the other offerings, but this isn't too bad if you're doing an "everything bath or shower" (e.g., face mask, exfoliating etc.). or you want to kick back and relax.

The budget-friendly price does make it one of the best everyday purple shampoos, although for me it did have somewhat of a drying effect. To combat the frizz, I simply left my conditioner on for longer and made sure to apply extra heat protection when using styling tools.

For the affordable price bracket and the fantastic results, I'd say that it's definitely worth the wait!

Best purple shampoo for curly hair

Becky Fuller/Yours.co.uk

We tried the Only Curls Purple Curl Cleanser, along with the Only Curls Purple Curl Conditioner. Chester's hair is naturally curly and blonde, although it is much lighter in the summer months. Both products are very dark purple, which is fine except when they splash up the walls of the shower, and it needs a bit of a scrub to get the splash marks off.

It smells lovely - particularly the conditioner. The shampoo doesn't have much of a lather, although I've heard from my hairdresser that that's a good thing as it means there's not much sulphates. But Chester didn't feel like he'd cleaned his hair very well. After the first use, Chester complained that his hair didn't feel soft. It usually feels silky after conditioning, but it felt dry. Unfortunately this continued, and his hair became increasingly dry and frizzy until we stopped using it.

Chester doesn't brush his hair, just runs his fingers through it to keep the curls tight, but we ended up having to de-tangle his hair with an afro comb, which we only usually have to do after he's done a lot of swimming - which also dries his hair out. He was hoping the shampoo would make his hair blonder like it goes in the summer, but instead, it left a brassy tone, which he really didn't like. His hair is his pride and joy, so we are always paying out to try new products that protect the curls and the condition of his hair. Unfortunately, we didn't feel like Only Curls did either of these things, but judging by customer reviews, it may remove more brassiness on dyed hair rather than natural locks.

Urtekram Chamomile Shampoo for Blond HairLorna White/Yours.co.uk

Rrp: $19.02

Price: $18.12

The Urtekram Chamomile Shampoo for Blond Hair and conditioner is a great everyday shampoo and conditioner set for blonde hair. The first thing I noticed was the smell as it really does make the whole shower smell spa like and because it only uses natural ingredients, the scent isn’t overpowering or too sweet. The packaging is also very minimal and stylish no matter what your bathroom décor.

When I started using the products, I quickly realised I needed to use quite a lot of product to fully shampoo my hair, so it might not be best suited for those with long and thick hair like mine. Although I had to use a lot, it did leave my hair feeling very clean and fresh.

After a few washes, I did find I was needing a purple shampoo wash to takeaway the brassy yellow tones in my hair so although this shampoo is great between those purple washes, you’ll probably still want a purple shampoo for when your hair looks a little brassy.

As someone who suffers from a dry scalp from time to time, particularly in the winter, I was a little disappointed to find my scalp was a little flaky after using this shampoo for a few weeks so it may not be suited to those who suffer with scalp dryness, but all in all my hair felt refreshed.

Pros

  • 100 per cent natural ingredients
  • Leaves hair feeling clean

Cons

  • Not as effective as purple shampoo at removing brassy tones

FAQs

What does purple shampoo do?

"Purple shampoo neutralises unwanted brassy/yellow tones in the hair. It gives a temporary effect and washes out after the hair is shampooed unless the hair is in poor condition (porous), in which case it can sometimes be absorbed and become patchy," says Senior Colour Director Chloe Thompson.

How to use purple shampoo

"Purple shampoo should be used instead of your normal shampoo. Wet your hair first, then shampoo twice, and then follow with a conditioner. Some brands have purple conditioners that can be used together."

How often should you use purple shampoo?

"Depending on the amount of times a week you shampoo your hair, I would advise you not to use purple shampoo every time. Alternate with your regular shampoo to avoid colour build up, or alternatively use once a week."

How to get purple shampoo out of the hair?

"If you find that the purple is building up in the hair and staining it, use a detox shampoo. This will open up the cuticle of the hair and release the colour pigment. Or alternatively use your regular shampoo and wash a few times to gradually fade the purple tone."

What does purple shampoo do to brown hair?

"Purple shampoo doesn't have much of an effect on brown hair unless it has a brassy tone. Then the purple shampoo would neutralise the unwanted yellow tones. It's best to use purple shampoo on highlighted, grey or lightened hair to achieve the best results."
