With the best cordless hair straightener, achieving sleek, smooth hair without the hassle of cords is easy. I’ve been straightening my thick and curly hair for over 20 years (think of all the bottles of heat protectant I’ve gone through!), so I’ve tried many a pair of straighteners across the years, but the idea of cordless straighteners excites me. While straighteners have been around for ages, cordless ones are a relatively new hair tool, but the advancements in battery technology mean you can now style on the go without the need for a plug socket. If you want a convenient way to straighten and style your hair wherever you are, a cordless straightener is the perfect solution.

The biggest thing that cordless hair straighteners offer is freedom. No longer are you tied to only straightening your hair to the nearest power outlet; you can do it wherever and whenever you need to. Whether you need a touch-up after being out in the wind or the sometimes humid British weather, after the gym or if you’re heading out after a day at the desk, you can say goodbye to the frizz and hello to sleek locks. They’re also great for travelling. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve stayed at a hotel and the nearest power socket is nowhere near the mirror. I’ve had to scramble around in my makeup bag to find a little compact, so I’ve at least got something to look in while using my hair straighteners. With a cordless hair straightener, that’s a thing of the past as I move to where the mirror is, unrestricted by wires and cables.

Best cordless hair straightener at a glance:

When looking for the best cordless hair straightener for your needs, there are a couple of things you’ll want to consider. Battery life is crucial as there’s nothing worse than being halfway around your hair and the battery is out, so you’ll want to find a device that lasts long enough for a full styling session (this will all depend on the length and thickness of your hair, though). If you’re worried about heat damage, adjustable heat settings are important too, as you can customise the temperature to suit your hair type without compromising on the results and minimising impact to the hair. Some of the best cordless hair straighteners have high-quality ceramic or titanium plates, so look out for these as they’re designed to get hair gliding through smoothly without pulling.

Cordless hair straighteners offer a good balance of power, portability, and performance to help you achieve salon-worthy sleekness anytime, anywhere. Whether you’re a frequent traveller or simply looking for a styling solution that you can take with you to use on the go, a cordless hair straightener can help you achieve your hair goals. I’ve rounded up some of the best cordless hair straighteners on the market, with a couple of them tried and tested by myself and the Yours team. Read on to discover your new favourite hair tool.

Best cordless hair straighteners overall

If you're after a cordless straightener that truly puts you in control, the Cloud Nine Original Cordless Iron is a top contender. With three adjustable heat settings, it's easy to find the perfect temperature for your hair type, whether you want to tame fine strands or, like me, you want to smooth out thicker, curlier locks. I found that the plates are just the right length for my hair, so if you've got medium to long hair too, they should allow you to take a good chunk of hair in one pass.

The standout feature of these cordless Cloud Nine Straighteners is the option to have the plates vibrate while in use. At first, I wasn't sure what the button that activated this feature was for, but it's actually a genius way to know the straighteners are on and working their magic without second-guessing if they're on or accidentally burning yourself trying to find out.

If you're planning on using this straightener while travelling, the Cloud Nine already comes with plug adaptors, so it's easy to charge up no matter where you are. The only downside is that the carry case that it comes with is only big enough to slide the straightener into and not the cable or plug, so you'd need to store that separately, which is a little bit annoying. For my first experience of Cloud Nine straighteners, I was very impressed with the temperature control, the smooth styling it offered for my hair type and the thoughtful extras like the plate vibration and travel adaptor plugs.

Pros

  • Option to turn on plate vibration so you know they're switched on without accidently burning yourself trying to find out
  • Three adjustable heat settings so you can get the right temperature for your locks

Cons

  • The carry case it comes with is only big enough for the straightener and not the cable and plug for charging so that needs to be carried separately
Run time:Up to 20 minutes
Charge time:Approximately 90 minutes

Best cordless straighteners for short hair

I have been loyal to ghd since I got my very first pair for my 13th birthday way back in 2006, so I was very excited to try the cordless offering from them. The first thing I noticed about the ghd Unplugged Cordless Hair Straightener when I turned them on is that they heat up very quickly, so there's no waiting around for them to get to the right temperature when you're looking to touch up your hair. It comes with a sleek, well-sized carry case that fits not only the straightener but also the charging cable, making it super travel-friendly. The run time is around 20 minutes, which isn't the longest on our list, but if you need a quick refresh after the gym or heading out from desk to dinner after work, these ghds are incredibly convenient.

I did find the plates a little on the shorter side as I have quite thick, medium to long-length hair, meaning I had to work in small sections to get through my hair. Not a dealbreaker, but something to keep in mind if you have thick or long locks, like mine, as the charge could run out before you get around your whole head. That being said, though, I found they were the perfect size for tackling my fringe, and my mum liked them to flick the ends of her shoulder-length voluminous hair, so I think they'd be the dream for anyone with short hair.

These cordless straighteners deliver that signature ghd smoothness and shine, but of course, being cordless, it doesn't quite pack the same power as its wired siblings. Just like the wired option, they also don't have a temperature control, but with its dual-zone technology, the ceramic heaters guarantee a consistent styling temperature of 185ºC for healthy-looking results. The ghd Unplugged is a solid choice for touch-ups and styling on the move as it's stylish and does the job well. Would they replace my full-sized ghds? Not quite. However, I would definitely keep them in my bag for emergency hair fixes while I'm out and about.

Pros

  • Heat up very quickly so no need to wait for ages for them to get to the right temperature
  • Travel case fits the straightener and charging cable so it's very handy for travel

Cons

  • The run time is around 20 minutes so the charge could run out before you've had a chance to style your whole head if you have long/thick hair
Run time:Around 20 minutes
Charge time:Two hours

Best luxury cordless hair straightener

Dyson Corrale Hair StraightenerDyson

Dyson made its name in the world of vacuum cleaners, but they are becoming a market leader in the world of hair tools too. If you’re looking for a cordless hair straightener that combines cutting-edge technology with sleek aesthetics, the Dyson Corrale is one to consider. It boasts innovative flexing plates made from a manganese copper alloy, which shape around your hair as you’re styling to prevent strands from slipping out while going over your hair with the plates, which is particularly handy for those with thicker or frizz-prone hair.

Product editor, Lorna White, put it to the test for Yours and loved that it had the ability to straighten hair at a lower temperature while still achieving smooth, sleek results. Lorna has naturally curly and frizzy, quite thick hair and usually cracks the straighteners up to the highest heat setting in order to achieve a silky, straight look but she found the Dyson Corrale worked just as well as a reduced heat level, making it a great choice if you’re looking to minimise heat damage. However, Lorna did find the temptation to crank it up to the highest setting for quicker results was definitely there. While the straightener heats up incredibly quickly, it takes a while to cool down, which is something to keep in mind if you have pets, kids or grandchildren around.

The biggest drawback Lorna found is its weight. Compared with other cordless straighteners, it’s noticeably heavier, making it tricky to manoeuvre when styling hair, so if you struggle with joint pain or need something lightweight to handle, the Corrale might not be the best option. The Dyson Corrale is a premium purchase, but it's undeniably stylish and a beautiful addition to any dressing table, so if you’re after a professional-level cordless hair tool, it’s worth considering.

Best cordless straighteners for fine hair

Delivering seeking, smooth results with its three heat settings, the BaByliss 9000 Cordless Straightener is a good choice for those with delicate strands. You can control the temperature to be 160°C, 180°C or 200°C so you can customise it to suit your hair type. Many reviewers love how effortlessly the ceramic plates glide through their hair, leaving it glossy and frizz-free. The lightweight design is another huge for being able to manoeuvre them around your head, plus you can easily take them with you on the go and give your hair a quick touch-up.

The battery life is decent, offering around 30 minutes of styling per charge. For those with fine hair, that should be more than enough time to do your whole head, but some customers with thicker locks wished it had a bit more power to completely finish their hair in one charge. These BaByliss Cordless straighteners also take a little longer to heat up than some plug-in straighteners, say some customers online, which can be frustrating if you're in a rush. Overall, these straighteners will give you the ability to achieve smooth styles on fine hair while out and about with a choice of temperature settings to prevent your locks from heat damage.

Pros

  • The plates effortlessly glide through the hair, leaving it glossy and frizz-free
  • Lightweight design so easy to manoeuvre around your head

Cons

  • Take a little longer to heat up than some plug-in straighteners
Run time:Around 30 minutes
Charge time:Around three hours

Best cordless hair straightener for battery life

REVAMP iGen Cordless Ceramic Hair StraightenerREVAMP/Amazon

With its ceramic plates and ionic technology, the Revamp iGen Cordless Ceramic Hair Straightener promises smooth, frizz-free results without the hassle of a cord. It heats up quickly, reaching a max temperature of 200°C, so you can use it for styles ranging from sleek and straight to soft waves. The plates are infused with keratin, argan and coconut oils to really enhance the shine.

To ensure you should hopefully never run out of charge despite being cordless, this straightener comes with two batteries so you can be using one and have the other one on charge. Each battery lasts around 30 minutes, so between the two, you’ll get up to an hour’s worth of styling time. If you’ve got fine hair, you should be able to get around your head with just one battery but for those with thicker hair, you may have to switch to the other one to ensure you can fully style your hair, which is slightly annoying if you want to use these straighteners on the go as you need to remember to take the other battery with you. To give you peace of mind, it has an auto shut-off feature that means it'll automatically turn off after 15 minutes of non-use, which will also help save the battery life.

Reviewers love the portability and weight of these straighteners, saying they’re lightweight and a great size to pop into a gym bag or handbag. The plates are designed to glide through the hair smoothly, although some reviewers with very coarse or curly hair found that they needed to go through their hair a couple of times before getting it to look super sleek and shiny. However, those with fine to medium hair are impressed with the results after one pass-through, leaving the hair looking smooth and silky.

Pros

  • Comes with two batteries so you can be using one and have one on charge
  • Plates are infused with keratin, argan and coconut oils, to really enhance to shine

Cons

  • Some reviewers with very coarse or curly hair found that they needed to go through their hair a couple of times before getting it to look super sleek and shiny
Run time:Up to one hour across two batteries
Charge time:Around 3.5 hours

Best budget cordless hair straightener

Another option from Revamp on our list, the Revamp Liberate Cordless Compact Ceramic Straightener is a great budget buy, retailing at under £100. It delivers sleek, smooth styles without the hassle of wires, making it perfect for giving your hair a refresh when you're out and about. The heat-up time is pretty speedy, so you won't have to wait long to get styling. The ceramic plates glide through the hair with ease, too, keeping the frizz at bay and leaving your barnet looking silky smooth.

It has three heat settings, low at 160°C, medium at 180°C and high at 210°C, and it’s equipped with advanced intelligent heat control technology that regulates the temperature while you’re using them on your hair to minimise damage caused by heat. Reviewers think it’s a great option for travelling as it has an on-the-go travel lock on the plates, which makes them come together in a more compact size, so they won’t take up lots of room in your bag. Reviewers do think the battery life could be better, but as its run time is 30 minutes, it’s around the same as others on my list. For a budget-friendly cordless straightener, it does the job of styling your hair beautifully. It ticks all the right boxes for being affordable and convenient.

Pros

  • Equipped with advanced intelligent heat control technology to minimise heat damage to your hair while styling
  • Have a travel lock on the plates so you can lock them together to make them more compact in your bag

Cons

  • Reviewers think the battery life could be better but at 30 mins, it's around the same as others I've featured
Run time:Up to 30 minutes
Charge time:Approx. three hours

My verdict: Which is the best cordless straightener?

In my opinion, the best cordless hair straightener is the Cloud Nine Original Cordless Iron Hair Straightener. I liked that it had adjustable heating settings so I could adapt it to best suit my hair type and that the size is very travel-friendly, although the case is too small to fit the cable and plug for recharging on the go. The vibrating plates are also a nice touch, as you can easily tell whether the straighteners are on and working as you pass them through the hair.

Yes, you absolutely can get battery-powered hair straighteners aka cordless hair straighteners. They're perfect for styling on the go as they're cordless, compact and great for travel. Just make sure you take the time to recharge the battery so your straighteners are ready for action whenever you need them.

Most of the cordless hair straighteners I've featured on this list have a battery life of between 20 to 30 minutes per charge.
