DIY Christmas wreath instructions

  1. Cut the clusters of berries from the garland.
  1. Arrange the berries around the wreath and secure using wire to attach them to the wreath.
  1. To attach a wire to the berries, fold a florist wire in half to form a loop. Hook the loop over the bottom berry and wrap the tails around the stem in opposite directions.
  1. Next, wire the cones. Place the cone in the centre of the wire and feed the wire around the bottom of the cone until it disappears. Twist the wire when it meets and use the tails to secure to the wreath.
  1. To attach the components to the wreath, separate the wires so there is a wire either side of the wreath base. Pull tight and twist the wires together to secure. Cut off all excess wire using the wire cutters.
  1. Finish the wreath with a festive ribbon bow.

Christmas wreath top tips

Liam Lapping from Flowercard shared his top tips on how to make the perfect Christmas wreath.

Make it green

Important talks around climate change have made people think more about the planet and the impact they’re having on it. Christmas decorations shouldn’t be exempt from this, so when you’re making your wreath, try using a rattan frame instead of a metal one, then go out foraging to find different types of spruce variants to add depth and texture to your wreath. Scrap the plastic decorations and instead opt for dried flowers, dried fruit, and natural holly to adorn your Christmas wreath.

Make it last longer

If you’re using all-natural decorations then you want to ensure it sees you throughout the festive season, especially as people are decorating their homes earlier than ever. To keep your wreath looking as good as the day you made it, get an old spray bottle and fill it with water. Every few days give your wreath a spray and it will stay fresh.

Measure your door

Most wreaths are placed on the front door of a home, however, if you want to get creative you can also place a wreath on your garage, gate, shed, or even window. Wherever you put your wreath, make sure to measure the space and ensure your wreath fits without getting in the way of any functioning parts.

Think about the colour scheme

Depending on where you want to put your wreath, think about your colour scheme. Inside, ensure the colours you’re adding to your wreath match the colours on your tree and your decorations.

If you’re putting your wreath outside, you can experiment with different colours and be bold! For a more luxurious wreath, Liam recommends “using different textures of the same colours to add depth while keeping the overall look tasteful. If you’re going bold, choose opposing colours from the colour wheel for impact.”

Go from large to small

When it comes to making the perfect wreath Liam says, “it is best to start large then work your way down. Start with your large piece of foliage first, then bulk out with smaller pieces of foliage and flowers, then decorate with smaller dried ingredients.”

DIY Christmas wreath inspiration

If you need a little inspiration before you get started, there are plenty of places to look online and, in true Blue Peter fashion, here's one we made earlier!

One of our Yours writers, Eleanor Weaver, made a Christmas wreath herself with friends as a wholesome activity one afternoon.

“If you enjoy getting creative, this is definitely something I’d recommend doing with friends or family who have a similar flair for it. Together with a couple of friends, we ordered some Christmas wreath rings from Amazon, foraged our gardens for greenery, dried out some oranges, and bought some ribbon for the finishing touches. This was all our first time making Christmas wreaths and with a little inspiration from Pinterest and each other, they all turned out lovely!

"We were all really proud of our creations and it made for a wonderful afternoon with, of course, mince pies and Christmas music included. Mine is now hanging on my front door, and while it’ll only last for this season, I can keep the wreath ring to make again next year. It’s become a new, annual activity for us in the lead-up to Christmas.”
