A flower wall makes the perfect addition to any birthday party, wedding, retirement do or any occasion where you need decorations.

They’re a brilliant idea for the spring and summer months when flowers are in bloom, but you can even make them with fake flowers or paper flowers if the varieties of flowers and plants aren’t in season in the colder months, or if you're wanting your flower wall to last.

We’ve put together all the instructions you need to have a go at making your own flower wall along with a useful video tutorial. We’ve also added in some flower walls to buy if yours doesn’t go to plan so you won’t be left without one!

How to make a flower wall

You will need:

• Fake or real flowers with at least a three inch stem - it's entirely up to you whether or not you use real or faux flowers. If you're making a flower wall for a wedding and you have time to make the wall the day before or in the morning, then you might prefer to stick to real. But if you're making your wall ahead of time or need it to last, it's probably best to go with faux flowers. Faux flowers are also more cost effective as you can order them in bulk and they will last.

The styles and colours you use are entirely up to you, but we'd recommend choosing a range of sizes to achieve the perfect flower wall.

• A metal grid or plastic panel bracket.

• Wall hooks - the kind of hooks you'll want will depend on how big and heavy your wall is. For larger, heavier projects, you might want hooks which are a bit more permanent. If your flower wall is going outside, you'll want to be able to hang it up somewhere, so things like tree hangers or hangers that stick into the ground are a good idea.

Shop for your supplies

Roses are a really good addition to any flower wall as the heads are nice and big and they come in a real variety of colours and you get 30 stems.

Another stunning flower is a peony. These are available in a variety of colours and you get 30 heads per pack.

You'll want plenty of smaller flowers such as Babies Breath or Gypsophila to bulk out your wall.

You get 12 panels in this pack, and each can be fixed together to make one large panel. As it's flexible, it can be rolled up easily so is great for storage. Each panel measures 24-25.5cm

These metal grids are a lot more hardwearing and sturdy than other grids. They can be easily attached together using cable ties or something similar.

For a more permanent fix, you'll want a metal hook that you can hang your flower wall on inside.

For a more temporary fix, these adhesive stickers can be stuck to a wall to hang up your flower wall, hopefully without damaging your wall.

These large hooks can be used to hang up your flower wall outside, making it ideal for outdoor weddings and events.

These are an essential for securing your flowers and your panels altogether.

Step 1: Arrange your flowers into separate piles so that when you put them together, you'll get an even distribution of style, colour and size.

Step 2: Start to thread the stems through the gaps and secure them as you go with garden wire, working your way down so you get an even distribution of colours and sizes.

Step 3: Once it's full, you can add another panel and build as you please, being sure to attach each panel securely.

Step 4: When you're happy with the size and look of your wall, hang it up using the method you prefer.

Flower walls to buy

If you haven't got time to make your own, you could always buy your own flower wall.

This pack includes 20 panels with a plastic grid so that you can easily link them together, we recommend doing this with cable ties or pinning to the wall directly with hooks or nails.

Each pack contains 1 artificial flower wall tile measuring 63cm (W) x 45cm (H) and you can add these together to make a larger wall.

Each panel is sized 60cm x 40cm and you have the option to choose from five different panel sizes when buying. The London Flower Wall company also offer a huge range of different styles of wall, so it's worth having a good browse if you're on the hunt for a specific colour.

If your flower wall is for an event, it might be more cost effective to rent your flower wall. Uplit Event Hire offer a real range of flower wall rental with the option to add lights too.

Real flower walls

While you might want to have a go at making your own real flower wall, purchasing real flowers is rather expensive and working with real stems can be tricky, so it's probably best to ask a florist if they could assist you in the flower wall building process.
