The wait is almost over as Vigil is officially returning for series 3, and fans of the hit series can expect even more gripping suspense and edge-of-your-seat drama. Set to dive deeper into the world of covert investigations, military tension, and high-stakes action, season three promises to deliver a fresh wave of thrilling twists and complex characters.

Suranne Jones (who rose to fame playing Karen McDonald on Coronation Street in the early 200s) is back as DCI Amy Silva while Rose Leslie, known for her roles in Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones, plays fellow office and Amy's lover, DCS/I Longacre.

In an exciting turn of events, Rose Leslie has let slip that "this time, Kirsten will get to pack her bags and join Amy on what's set to be Vigil's most high-stakes mission yet!".

"I can’t wait to get stuck into another season of Vigil, to work with the wonderful Suranne Jones again and our brilliant crew.", she added.

Suranne Jones is also eager to return to the show. "I can't wait to return to Vigil series three, see our brilliant team in Scotland and work with Rose again. I'm sure it will be a thrill of a ride."

The show made its debut on BBC One and iPlayer in 2021, when DCI Silva was sent to into deep ocean waters in a nuclear-powered Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarine and Vigil series 2 returned in 2023, with her going to the Middle East to uncover the truth behind a drone shooting on a training exercise.

This time, their characters will be plunged into plummeting temperatures at an isolated Arctic research station as a member of a covert British special forces mission has been fatally shot. Amy and Kirsten have to not only track down the killer but also prevent a potential international crisis, fuelled by a scramble for energy and resources in the shifting polar climate, which is bound to jeopardise their careers and relationship.

Currently, there's no release date for series 3 of Vigil, as filming is due to take place in Scotland later this year. We're expecting to see six 60-minute episodes, as per the format of the previous installments.

If you want to see more of Suranne Jones, you'll be delighted to hear that she's going to be starring in Film Club, a BBC comedy-drama as an "eccentric and often unconventional" mother.

You can also watch all 12 episodes of Vigil on BBC iPlayer now.
