Vigil trailer
If you have watched the Vigil series 2 trailer you know that we will be in for a treat, as there’s a stellar cast lined up, including Line of Duty’s very own Martin Compston and Game of Thrones’ Rose Leslie. As well as the series one cast members, we can expect to see some new faces including actors Dougray Scott and Chris Jenks.
In an appearance on The One Show back in May 2023, Suranne shared that filming had begun for the second series.
Speaking to hosts Lauren Laverne and Jermaine Jenas, she said, "I'm going back to Scotland tomorrow, to film some in Glasgow. And we're filming in Glasgow and Morocco, and then back into Glasgow,"
Surprisingly, Suranne also revealed that there will be no submarine's featured in the new series. "There's no submarines, which I'm thrilled about because that was hardcore and it was in the middle of COVID," she shared.
Here’s everything you need to know about BBC’s Vigil and the second series, including the release date news, plot line, who’s starring in it and how you can watch it…
What is Vigil about?
Created by the makers of Line of Duty, Vigil is set in Scotland and follows Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva as she’s called on board the Trident nuclear submarine, HMS Vigil, to investigate the mysterious death of a crew member.
The death is written off as an accidental overdose, but Amy suspects there’s more to the case than meets the eye, especially when a Scottish fishing trawler also suddenly goes missing too.
While Silva leads the investigation at sea, her partner, DS Kirsten Longacre, takes charge back on land, and the pair unravel a conspiracy that goes to the very heart of Britain's national security.
Who stars in Vigil?
BAFTA award winning actress Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack, Doctor Foster, Coronation Street) leads as DCI Amy Silva who’s called aboard the submarine to investigate its strange events.
Speaking about the drama ahead of the first series, Suranne said: “It is set in a world I know nothing about and is such an exciting story. Amy Silva is a brilliantly complex character, thrown into a highly charged situation where her authority is weakened. She’s navigating her own personal trauma and loss, all at a time when she’s questioning her relationships and life choices.
“She doesn’t know much about the world she’s entering into or the rules the Navy has for underwater. Our director thought it would be a good idea to keep me slightly separate as far as researching the role went, so, I didn’t have to do much of that. When it came to filming, it was like I was playing it in real time which was really interesting.”
Suranne is also joined by Rose Leslie who plays Silva’s partner, DS Kirsten Longacre. Rose is best known for her role as Ygritte on Game of Thrones and Gwen Dawson on Downton Abbey.
Line of Duty’s very own Martin Compston, who played waistcoat lover detective Steve Arnott, also joined the Vigil cast as one of the Royal Navy on board HMS Vigil.
Other stars include Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot), Paterson Joseph (The Peep Show), Anjli Mohindra (The Bodyguard), Shaun Evans (Endeavour), Adam James (Doctor Foster) and Lauren Lyle (Outlander).
