Sarah Ferguson's novels

Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, is no stranger to putting pen to paper - she has previously written several children's books and works of nonfiction, including her memoirs.

The Duchess has already written two works of nonfiction about Queen Victoria, and became the driving force behind the creation of The Young Victoria, the award-winning 2009 film, so has done extensive research into the era.

Sarah discovered that Lady Margaret's parents, the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, were close friends with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, but was unable to discover much more.

“With real historical events and facts to hand, my imagination took over," explains Sarah, "I invented a history for her that incorporated real people and events, including some of my other ancestors.

“I created a friendship between Margaret and Princess Louise, Queen Victoria’s sixth child, and I drew on many parallels from my life for Lady Margaret’s journey.

"The research I did for my books on Osborne House and Queen Victoria's travels inspired me, as did my family's history with my mother's family at Powerscourt, an estate near Dublin, and the Buccleuch history on my father's side," she says.

“I have long held a passion for historical research and telling the stories of strong women in history through film and television. I am proud to bring my personal brand of historical romance fiction to the publishing world.”

But this book, Her Heart For a Compass, is her first romantic novel, inspired by experiences in her own life. It is a fictional account of the life and love story of her great-great-aunt, Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott.
Sarah revealed that she'd wanted to write a novel for years but was looking for the right story to tell. While researching her ancestry she found Lady Margaret.
"I was struck by the fact that we shared a name: Margaret is my middle name. Since very little more information was easily found about her, it seemed she would be an ideal vehicle for me to weave my story around," says Sarah.
"Set in the Victorian era, the book is about daring to follow your heart against the odds."
