Gavin & Stacey and Stella star Ruth Jones is set to return to the BBC in an exciting new project with one of her friends and co-stars. The project will celebrate the history of Wales.
The actress, best known for playing Nessa Jenkins and co-writing the record-breaking sitcom, is teaming up with her pal, fellow actor and comedian Steven Speirs for an hour-long special called Ruth and Steve: from Merthyr with Love, where they explore the town of Merthyr Tydfil.
BBC Cymru Wales has commissioned the special, which is one of four programmes that will coincide with the bicentenary of Cyfarthfa Castle.
“To take someone who’s very special to me to the place that’s most special to me was one of the happiest filming experiences of my life. We laughed so much, we talked so much… and we nearly cried quite a few times." Steven Speirs said about filming.
"Our Merthyr trip was brilliantly memorable for both of us. If the joy of the weekend comes over half as much on the telly box as it was in reality… then I’ll be very pleased."
Ruth added: "Merthyr Tydfil! Who knew?! I had the best time learning about this brilliant place and being shown around by my dear friend Steve Speirs. I’m definitely going back!”
The programming will also feature a two-part stand-up special, Live From Merthyr Tydfil, hosted by comedian Kiri Pritchard-McLean. Filmed earlier this year at Merthyr’s Theatr Soar, both episodes will highlight a variety of Welsh comedic talent. Additionally, a landmark documentary titled Boom Town, presented by Steffan Powell, will use advanced technology and AI to bring over 200 years of Merthyr’s history to life.
