What is a cold case?

In the world of criminal investigations, a cold case is perhaps the greatest enigma. When 3 years have passed without new evidence, significant leads or breakthroughs, then a case is labelled a “cold case.” These cases, typically shrouded in mystery due to limited or missing information – no motive, known associates, or the victim’s backstory - can often remain unsolved for decades, leaving the families of the victims without closure. Cold Cases Reopened takes viewers into these haunted cases that baffled authorities for years, but then got a second chance at resolution through dedicated investigative work and scientific advancements.

This gripping series began on the 13th of November  with the episode “A Deadly Addiction.” In Hamblen County, Tennessee, the opioid crisis has woven a dark tapestry of pain and desperation. It’s here that Michelle 'Mickey' Moore's life ended brutally in 2003. Her secluded log cabin, the nearby trees, and her quiet life were shattered by an unimaginable act of violence. The hunt for her killers spanned over a decade, and after countless hours of work, detectives finally linked Mickey’s tragic fate to a local couple, revealing the cruel intersection of addiction and crime.

At 10 PM tonight, 14th November, Cold Cases Reopened delves into the night when Jan Cornell's life changed forever on May 9th, 1990. After leaving her daughter, Robin, and her best friend, Lisa Story, at home for what seemed like an ordinary evening, Jan returned to find both had been murdered in their Cape Coral residence.

Despite the perpetrator leaving behind numerous clues, this case went cold for decades—until a routine DNA sample revealed a shocking truth, connecting the murders to Joseph Zieler, who had no prior connection to the victims before that fateful evening and was sentenced after just five hours of jury deliberation. This tragic story serves as a reminder that while justice may take time, the commitment to achieve it never wavers.

Later in the series, Cold Cases Reopened casts a microscopic lens on the disturbing case of ‘The Blythe Strangler.’ On August 30th, 1992, the decaying body of an unidentified woman is found on a California highway. Riverside County Sheriffs have nothing to go on – no leads, no witnesses and no apparent motive – so despite their best efforts, the case remained unsolved. Some years later, a letter to a reporter led to Keith Hunter Jesperson, a man with a twisted compulsion to confess his crimes. Known as 'The Blythe Strangler,' serial killer Jesperson’s dark confessions add a chilling new layer to a case that seemed impossible to solve. This episode uncovers how ego and a compulsion to relive the past became tools for justice.
