ITV has announced that there will be a Mr Bates vs The Post Office documentary, following the success of the TV drama that was broadcast earlier this year.

The series (which was watched by over 13.5 million people in 28 days) became ITVs most successful drama launch in over a decade, beating the likes of Downton Abbey (which began in 2010). It raised awareness of the terrible injustice that over 900 sub-postmasters went through after being falsely accused of false accounting, fraud and theft following an IT malfunction when their new system Horizon, showed incorrect shortfalls on their account.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office documentary will focus on Alan Bates himself and will also feature other key figures including Jo Hamilton, Noel Thomas and Jess Uppal, whose stories were depicted on ITV's factual drama back in January.

Here's the official synopsis: "Eye-opening documentary - the story of one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in British legal history. Hundreds of sub-postmasters were accused of crimes that were not theirs."
