Lady Marina is the middle child and first daughter of George Windsor, Earl of St Andrews, and his wife Sylvana Tomaselli. She is named after her great-grandmother Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark.

Her elder brother is Edward Windsor, Lord Downpatrick, a British travel consultant and fashion designer, and her younger sister is Lady Amelia Windsor, a fashion model.

Her paternal grandfather is Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, who is a first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II and second cousin to King Charles II.

Why was Lady Marina Windsor removed from the line of succession?

In 2008 (aged 16), Lady Marina hit the headlines after forfeiting her place in the line to the throne. This decision came after she and her older brother were confirmed in the Roman Catholic faith, which, under the Act of Settlement 1701, disqualified her from the line of succession. At the time, she was 25th in line to the throne, and her departure highlighted the ongoing complexities within the British monarchy regarding religion and succession laws.

This choice, however, did not seem to cause public or personal controversy for Lady Marina. Instead, it allowed her a greater degree of personal freedom, a hallmark of her life since then. In 2015, the rules were changed with the Succession to the Crown Act, allowing Catholics to marry into the royal family without losing their place in line, though the act was not applied retroactively to restore Marina’s position.
