King Charles III Coronation will see Charles crowned as the reigning monarch alongside Camilla as Queen Consort. It's common for monarchs to be awarded a medal following their coronation which will also be given to other royals, government officials and members of the Armed Forces.

As well as Charles and Camilla – and likely those in attendance at the coronation service, more than 400,000 people are to receive a medal in recognition of their contribution to the King's Coronation.

Made of nickel silver, it has the royal cypher a laurel wreath and the date of the Coronation on the reverse, and a double portrait of the King and Queen Consort on the front.

The ribbon is made up of red, blue and white vertical stripes - the colours of the Union Flag and are made of nickel silver and plated in nickel.

The Medal acts as a thank you gift from the nation to commemorate the Coronation for the people who will make the historic service happen.

Recipients include police, ambulance workers, choristers and military personnel working at the Coronation.

It will also be given to emergency service workers, prison staff and members of the armed forces with more than five years of full service.

Living recipients of the George Cross or Victoria Cross will also receive the coronation medal.

AWARD commemorative medal

The Armed Forces charity AWARD will be issuing its own commemorative medal to mark the occasion.

Their website reads: 'Available to all veterans who served the crown and those who are currently serving members of the Armed Forces, Emergency Services personnel (paid, retained or voluntary), Prison Service, Police Community Support Officers, holders of the Victoria Cross and George Cross and members of the Royal Household. Next of kin and direct descendants may also apply.'

A description of that medal reads: 'The obverse of the highly polished medal depicts The Crown, The Orb and The Sceptre, symbols of the monarchy surrounded by the wording THE CORONATION OF HIS MAJESTY CHARLES III and the date 6th MAY 2023.

'On the reverse the stylishly designed Charles III cypher is surrounded by the wording PROTECTOR OF ALL FAITHS to reflect the King`s desire to protect the free practise of all faiths in this country and the date of the coronation.'

Did Queen Elizabeth get a coronation medal?

Yes, during The Queen's coronation in 1953, she received a coronation medal to mark the event. Her medal was given to Firm members as well as 37 members of the 1953 Mount Everest expedition, who reached its summit four days before the coronation took place.
