How, in the words of his old Seventies teen rival David Cassidy, can he be sure?
“I married the perfect girl,” he replies matter of factly. Stop reading now if, in doing so, he broke your young fangirl heart, because it only gets worse. “Debbie’s not just my wife, she’s my partner, my confidante, my friend. We’re one basically,” he gushes.
“She gives me a perspective; a balance in my life. I love the way she’s raised our children and I love the way she’s a very sweet, kind individual to everyone she meets.”
He’s talking about the girl he met in his own teens in their Utah hometown. In 1978, when Donny was 20 and Debbie was 19, they married in a Mormon ceremony. Forty-five years later with five children and a fourteenth grandchild on the way, they’re still happily together.
So what’s their secret?
By his own admission, Donny is “extremely romantic” and regularly sends flowers to Debbie, believing that you can’t beat red roses.
