A Call The Midwife spin-off show could be in the works! In a recent interview, writer Heidi Thomas spoke to Radio Times about the future of the BBC period drama, saying “I don’t believe Call The Midwife will ever end, but I do think we might take a break at some point.”
However, as series 14 of Call The Midwife drew to a close, she hinted at a new chapter for the show, sparking speculation about what's in store for Poplar. While she is “not in a position to talk about things” currently, there is a “rolling, ongoing conversation” about the show’s future that they have at this stage every year. "Increasingly, we do see opportunities to expand our storytelling world," she added.
"So if we do take a break, it will be with a view to looking at other aspects of Call the Midwife."
Could this break lead to a spin-off series? Here's everything we know so far.
Will there be a Call The Midwife spin-off series?
It’s clear that Call the Midwife isn’t resting on its laurels; the creative minds behind it are constantly exploring ways to evolve the story and keep things fresh for viewers.
While details of a potential spin-off are scarce, the idea has sparked excitement among fans who are eager to see more of the world of Call The Midwife. With a rich tapestry of characters and decades of history to draw upon, there are countless possibilities for a new direction for the show.
One potential avenue could be Trixie's story, as a TV insider has told The Sun.
“Trixie is an obvious choice of subject because she is one of the wilder characters at Nonnatus House and therefore has the potential for a more interesting back story.
“When we were introduced to her in series one in 2012 she was in her early twenties and was already very worldly. So there is much to take a deep dive into."
While the show has reached the 70s, this prequel is suggested to take the storyline back to the 50s.
If the series goes ahead, it is unknown whether Helen George will reprise the role or if a different actress will play Nurse Franklin.

Another option could be to explore the lives of some of the older nuns before they came to Poplar, such as Sister Julienne (currently played by Jenny Agutter) or even surgery receptionist Miss Higgin's (Georgie Glen) life before Poplar, when she travelled to India and fell in love.
Or, a spin-off show following Timothy Turner (Max Macmillan) on his journey to become a doctor would be another interesting avenue to explore.
The opportunities for a Call The Midwife spin-off show are endless and whatever story they choose, we're sure it will be a great one!
