It was announced back in 2023 that one of the BBC's most beloved shows, Call The Midwife, would be returning to our screens for seasons 14 and 15, which creator Heidi Thomas said she was "overjoyed" about.

"Call the Midwife is the pride and joy of all who work on it, but it's our fantastic, loyal audience that matters most. We are a family behind the scenes, on the screen, and in front of the telly.", she said.

After an emotional two-part Christmas Special, the programme is entering into a new era as the latest series begins in 1970.

Call The Midwife season 14 release date: when does it start on BBC?

Season 14 of Call The Midwife begins on Sunday, 5th January, at 8pm. There will be eight episodes in total.

Call The Midwife season 14 plot

In a Facebook post, the Call The Midwife page wrote: "Series 14 opens on Sunday with the promise of spring sunshine in 1970 – but those shadows are never too far away for our midwives… ❤️

This year we venture into the heart-breaking theme of underage pregnancy – and the story of a family caught in a crisis of love, shame, and religious faith."

Here's the synopsis for the first episode: "It's March 1970. The team support a pregnant teenage girl whose parents believe in an immaculate conception. Demonstrations cause havoc for the Nonnatus team, whilst Nancy’s relationship blossoms."

The synopsis for episode 2 is as follows: "Rising rates of gonorrhoea in the district cause alarm, and Trixie cares for an unmarried first-time mother recently diagnosed with a mental health condition."

In the trailer for season 14 of Call The Midwife, Nurse Highland (Renee Bailey) and Nurse Turner (Laura Main) tend to babies, Fred (Cliff Parisi) and Violet (Annabelle Apsion) exchange glances at one another during the Isle of Dogs protest and Rosalind Clifford (Natalie Quarry) and Cyril Robinson (Zephryn Taitte) share a moment together.

Meanwhile, Trixie (Helen George) appears to enter a home through a boarded-up window.
