It’s safe to say it’s been an incredible year for Alison Hammond. From her co-presenting the BAFTAs with Richard E Grant, to joining Holly Willoughby, Craig Doyle and Dermot O’Leary on the famous sofa at This Morning, she’s been brightening up our days with her sunny personal- ity and infectious laugh. And she’ll soon be bringing her bubbly character to the Bake Off tent, when she joins Noel Fielding, Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood as a presenter on the tent, when she joins Noel Fielding, Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood as a presenter on the upcoming series of the show.

In a new interview, the TV star tells Yours she’s “excited” to be taking over from comedian Matt Lucas, who stepped down from duties late last year. “I was really chuffed when I got the job,” says Alison, 48. “I actually didn’t realise how much I wanted it until I had to audition with Noel. Then they took absolutely ages to tell me that I got the job. It was lovely when they finally called and said, ‘Nobody else would do it, so we’re going to go with you’.” Laughing that famous laugh, she adds, “No, I’m only joking – it was a lovely feeling.”

Alison is incredibly close to her son Aidan, 18, and she says breaking the news about her new role was a highlight. “It’s the sort of thing he’ll have on in the background while he’s gaming,” she explains. “He really loves Bake Off. I tell him everything. We tell each other everything.”

Despite having years of experience on This Morning under her belt, as well as a star turn on Strictly, Alison admits she was “so nervous” when she arrived for her first day of filming. “There was a moment where I was a little bit star-struck,” she confides. “I was like, ‘Oh God, I’m in Bake Off.’ It is nerve-wracking, it’s a big deal. I’ve watched it for so long!”

"I was so excited when I arrived on set, I did a little dance and Paul was like, ‘I could so pick you up,’ so I jumped on him, wrapped my legs around him, and both of us just toppled over!"
